The touch screen works well for the unit overall - despite the ultra mediocre TS software and Vista. However, one significant improvement should be implemented for next gen; have the screen flush with the shell, allowing you to click and scroll with your finger at the outer edges. For example, if a screen is maximized, how does someone (without a finger the width of a pencil) touch and scroll the scroll bar, or select the close "X" icon? It's pretty hard with the screen indented in the current gen model.

That's a very good idea. I do get mad when I go to X out an application and I have to tap a few times to get through to it.

Go to "Start" -> All Programs -> and then "Optimize for Touch"

It makes the scroll bars a little larger and makes teh Max, Min, Close buttons big enough for my thumb...I wear "large" gloves too. :-)

You can also go back to regular screen by following the above instructions but choosing "optimize for mouse".

hope that helps

Due to how the touch screen technology works, making it flush with the bezel is not an option.

If you don't have the Optimize for Touch program in Start - All Programs, you can download it from the HP Support site (the link may move):

This explains it, i was looking for the Optimize for Touch button for ten minutes before I saw this post. Thanks!

I try to access the optimize for touch app, but get this error: "the application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect."

I've done a full system restore, applied updates, then get the same error.

Being an artist, I am hoping to use a stylus rather than my finger some of the time. Since the touch is sensed by lasers around the periphery of the screen, I am hoping to have some options besides just using my fingers.

Anyone else try a stylus?

Accidentally conceived on New Year's Eve;
Born at the peak of Hurricane Season;
Creating storms of controversy ever since.

Just use a soft plastic tipped stylus so you don't scratch the glass...

And they're not lasers, just infrared LEDs and infrared cameras.

December 30, 2008 7:15 PM

Called HP support re: the error. They have no fix - say it's a known issue, but no way to resolve (for now).

December 31, 2008 9:50 AM

I used my tablet PC stylus and was able to write in the "TIP" or Tablet Input Panel as well as onenote. Howeverm touching the screen with anything else besides the stylus tip results in poor performance...such as with the palm of my hand.
From an artists perspective, since the screen is not pressure sensitive like Wacom tablets, you would be somewhat limited as to drawing and painting without manually changing brush size etc.

Can't you adjust the size of scroll bar and min/max/close buttons through Display properties/Appearance?

January 4, 2009 6:15 PM

You can but optomize for touch and optomize for mouse are pretty much one click solutions.

Could you do me a favor and help with some troubleshooting on this one?

Type Ctrl+Alt+S on the keyboard and look for the Build # or Build ID. It will start with two numbers. Please let me know what the Build ID of your system is.

Also, if you could let me know what version the Touch Optimizer has in Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall a program (you may have to turn on the version column for that, let me know if you need help with that.)

I suspect the system may be missing the correct version of the Visual C++ runtime libraries. The Build ID/# and Touch Optimizer version number will help verify that theory.

Wish I could, but it's sitting in its box in the mudroom ready for return to Costco. If it helps at all, the support agent had me install the C++ runtime libraries (from a URL I was given over the phone). I did that, but the error was still there.

Best of luck getting the resources you guys need to make the TouchSmart software live up to the potential. I'm really bummed we had such problems as I see such great potential. Tell me who to yell at to get you resources if you'd like... you have a real differentiator here, hate to see it wasted.

@nwtouchsmart:

It's hard to point at one specific person to yell at for getting resources on the development team. My personal take is that as long as the PC market is a race to the bottom on price (which it undeniably is), it will be hard to justify investing in people who write differentiating software. With the offshore outsourcing trends the way they are it's even more difficult.

But, your contributions on this site have made a difference already. I'm sad you don't allow people to send you private messages on this site.

When I first got my TS that I won from HP's Magic Giveaway, I took some "unboxing photos" to post on gottabemobile.com ( the site that I won it through).  Looking back at the digital photos, I can see that my camera "caught" some of the LED's in some of the pictures.  In the left side of the screen you can see some dim blue dots...presumably the emitters.  I'm away from home and forgot my photobucket login, so I'll post a picture of it when I'm back in town.

Kind of interesting looking.

Glad to see that HP listened when people spoke. Spring update addresses many of the concerns and suggestins people voiced on this board previously. Hopefully HP will continue to improve the software, which currently is the only reason Touchsmart line is not a 10/10. Despite sometimes going through frustration with my own machine and hearing about experiences similar to those above, im gonna hang on to it. What's important is that hardware is pretty much impeccable, software should evolve as more of these hit the market.

Hi all, I just found this page via Google (looking for a solution to the "side-by-side configuration is incorrect..." error on my HP Touchsmart) and think I have just determined the solution so thought I'd share. I don't get the error if I now try to manually run the executable for the optimizer and thus no error in the event log...

I'm not sure if the first part is needed, however I'll list it as Vista said there was a problem with the ordering of the permissions and also noticed I couldn't write to a file in the directory:

Part 1:
1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Hewlett-Packard and right-clik on the HP Touch Optimize folder and select the security tab.
2. Click on Edit to change the permissions. (NOTE: I chose these permissions on my own.)
Creator Owner, no permissions
System, full control
Administrators, full control
Users, read and execute, list folder contents, and read.
Trusted Installer, full control
3. Click OK.

Part 2:
1. Goto Microsoft's site and download the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) installer (YES the x86 installer): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8...

2. Then see if the problem disappears.
3. Run Windows Update (which I have not done yet but recommend so you have the latest updates for what you just installed).
4. If there were new updates for Visual C++ 2008 then verify if the problem with the Optimizer is still gone.

And hopefully that should do it. Please let me know if you have the same success which I believe I have had. (But then again it's only been a few minutes :))

Take care,
Charles

Great work! Thanks for sharing so quickly.

I was hoping it would be enough to install the Visual C++ 2008 SP1 runtime files.

I still want to do a proper repro in the lab with the specific configuration that exhibits the issue so I can say with certainty what the cause and simplest fix is.

January 11, 2009 8:13 AM

No problem. :) I dont' have access to my system right now in order to determine when my Event Logs started filling with this (and am not sure if it is related to a rundll host error that pops up every now and then and I just click ok to have disappear) however I would say take a 506 system, run all the latest HP updates for the system except the optimizer update and see if you have the problem. Then if not, grab the optimizer update and I have a feeling the problem will appear. (Just make sure to not have the Visual C++ 2008 files on there when you do all this. :D)

If you don't have the problem, it could be related to something with Windows Updates so you might have to figure out which one causes it. You could try a system where you don't do any of the Window Updates and just the HP updates and compare to a system with ALL Windows Updates and the HP updates.

Hope that helps. Now perhaps you can solve one for me (and in all honesty I haven't researched this one yet)... How come the HP Update software will fail to install updates? I believe it may have something to do with UAC or the HP Update process not running as Administrator but am unsure.

Thanks,
Charles
