 I want my money back!!

I wished I had read this forum before I went out and spent my Christmas bonus on this pile,

And unless HP can say “sorry we dropped the ball on this, wait a week or two and there will be a upgrade to fix all theses problems as we have all our software engineers working around the clock on this because this is one of the most expensive computers we have put out and we don’t need the negative publicity this is causing “ I will be getting my money back, I will never buy HP again, I will ensure that my company never buy HP again and slate HP on ever forum on the net.

Care to explain what your problem is before you go off ranting? Maybe we can help. I can't read minds but its obvious you have a problem so lets start at step one. What kind of problem are you having?

DaveTN, I'll second that. Specific feeback helps much more than a general statement of discontent.

If it's about the issues with Music/Photo/Video not being able to pull data from a network server/home media server or showing every single picture/song/video on the hard drive, that is feedback that has been given a lot already and HP is aware of it.

Any other specific feedback will help prioritize features for future versions and potential updates.

gee madpup what are the problems? what are u using it for

Personally this is the most amazing machine i have ever purchased ( of 200) and my companies develop for touch screen software

I have 5 other tablets and such and I really feel this is amazing value

so if your are dumping your hp touchs i will buy them, i will need 100's of these puppies

The problems are as stated in the thread "Not impressed so far"
and after i read the comments on here and other forums it does seem that there is a software problem, while i know you guys are working on it, it does not help with the problem right now, how long before we can expect a software update?, i do belive this is a way forward in the personal computing world, what bugs me is when i show it off to friends and family all they can see are the glaring faults, oh and a new fault that i love, i took all the photos and music files off the computer(moved to a external hard drive)which took hours?
i then restarted the computer and put all the photos and music file back in the
pictures and music folders and now to my horror i have two copys of every thing?
but only one copy works, ie
in the music folder i have two copys of britney's new album, i can open both folders to display the track list but only one will let me play the track, the other will show "item unavailable"
in the fan veiw only a small part of the colletion show up (maybe 100 albums),
i have over 800 albums(now over 1600 of which half work?)
and its the same for the pictures, plus i have 800 albums in the pictures view with the cover art from the music folder.

so guys, is there a software fix coming out soon? will it be available to us or will it only be released with new models?
in short, is it worth me holding on to this or should i get my money back while i can?

If you're within the return window, I'd take it back. After finding out iTunes is not compatible, the weather station can't retain a location without an odd workaround, HP knows the 'optimize for touch' is causing an error but can't fix, etc., I've made that same choice.

I'm with you: it's nice fixes are in the works, but once my money leave the bank account, it should be paying for a solid product, not a beta one. If HP wants to make inroads in this field, it better shore up its software capability - and soon... Sony, Apple, etc. are all looking for the next hot thing. HP almost had it.

December 30, 2008 10:07 PM

Hmm I'm trying to figure out my photo directories too, HMMM they seem to be in Pictures and my Photos folders. are there actually two sets here? or are is the pictures folder just an alias

December 31, 2008 12:39 AM

@madpup: First, thanks! If all your concerns are in the other thread that's exactly what I was after. Second, if you're telling me that the only reason you bought the computer was for the software, that makes me personally very happy, but I can see how you could feel shortchanged looking at everything you've listed in the other thread. I can't fix all the issues myself, but believe me I would try if I could. That's not to say I won't work to make things better, but there's only so much I can accomplish. If it wasn't purely bought for the software, you can still use the computer as a normal Vista desktop PC. I don't think it's a bad product at that.

If you really don't want to use the computer with the software issues as you see them, take it back. I can't give any timelines for software updates. Sorry, my hands are tied.

@nwtouchsmart: Thanks for the feedback.

Happy so far...

Received my HPTS 804 yesterday, and set up was a breeze. It recognized my wireless network and surfing is fast and pleasurable.

I have enjoyed the hi-res screen for viewing hi-def vids on youtube, and have just spent a couple of hours enjoying Second Life with this outstanding display and processing power.

I hope Photoshop works with it...

LOL...I'm glad I'm not the only one.  I have had tablets way back to the early Compaq TC1000, then HP TC1100, then a couple Toshiba tablets then A couple Fujitsu's now I just sold my Toshiba M200 to get a HP TX2500.  Also have a Samsung Q1 Ultra that I'm about to load Windows 7 on.

My list of touch screen devices doesnt even include the multitude of PocketPC and smartphones.  The list goes on.

As for the problems, I understand your pain too.  But, you are helping by posting your problems here.  Its obvious that thegeektieguy is "connected" and is listening and probably relaying our thoughts and problems, so thanks go out to him and all of you that tell us whats going on.

Bill, btw, I still have my very first PC.  Its a Commodore "Pet".  has a cassette tape drive for storage adn i think a whopping 8k of memory.  It also has a monochrome green screen.  And...it still works.  Good if you can write "code" in BASIC.  We've come a long way

I have a TS507 and so far, so good. I did have a problem with bit high/low
and checkerboard failures. And my wireless connection wouldn't work for some
reason, but ok on other systems. A reboot fixed these problems. Happened only once. The smart touch appears to be window dressing, but I didn't buy it for
that, I brought it for Windows 7, when it comes out. Should be much better
than HP software. I can't get the Power2Go DVD burner to work. Hangs on
'no response' for some reason. All software is up to date. For as desktop,
I feel I got my money worth, but a few expansion slots would help.

Happy New Years.

Heidi, photoshop works great with the TS.

madpup, I definitely feel your pain. The software guys need to get on the ball. They are about 6 months behind already. I agree that the software feels like early beta.

Geektieguy "I can't fix all the issues myself". You shouldn't have to. You guys should have a team working together. You represent HP for crying out loud. I'm sure they can afford to hire programmers that will work with you and get the software working the way it is supposed to. It's like buying a flying car just to find out it doesn't fly unless you board it in cargo. I was really hoping an update would be out by the new year. You guys aren't really going to wait a year after the product went public to actually make it work right are you? The pace in which you guys are working makes us HP Touchsmart owners feel that you may never get these things fixed.

and

"there's only so much I can accomplish." So, you are telling us that you are working alone? That none of the other programmers listen to you? Whatever the reason, you guys need to start working together or hire people who will. There are a ton of programmers that I personally know who would have fixed this thing by now just on basic principal and ego.

and

"If it wasn't purely bought for the software, you can still use the computer as a normal Vista desktop PC. I don't think it's a bad product at that." That is just a lame thing to say to someone who just dropped a months salary, or more, on a machine that promised more than it delivered. The day of Seamonkeys are over. You guys have failed to even stand up to your commercials. The ad campaign for the HP Touchsmart did not even show Windows Vista, it only showed the Touchsmart interface. So why would we expect anything else? X-Ray glasses anyone? Are we going to start seeing Touchsmart ads in the back of comic books?

The HP Touchsmart is a fine computer without the touch interface, but it is an $800 PC at best without the touch features. I know you have said that the Touchcenter software is free and that we paid for the machine and not the software. But you are totally wrong. The HP Touchcenter software, you know the software that was featured in the HP Touchsmart ads that I assume were launched by HP, was the soul reason I didn't buy a Dell XPS one. And it doesn't work.

I hadn't used my Touchcenter software for awhile. On Christmas I had some family over so I thought I would boot it up. I restarted my PC and loaded the Touchcenter and it froze. It turned into a black box with an X button that didn't work. I had to alt-tab and shut it down manually just to get back to Windows. Not that it matters. I would have still switched to Windows Media Center to play my music because the Touchcenter lists every music file on my computer, but I wanted to impress some family members with my new Touchsmart and I got pwned. That is bad grassroots. I guarantee that no one who watched me curse my HPTS is going to want to buy one.

Get it fixed please, soon.

January 2, 2009 2:25 PM

I'm not saying that I'm working alone, just that I don't have the authority necessary to really put steam behind what I'd like to see done, based on feeback from the community here.

Yes, of course we have a team of programmers (small, but a team nonetheless) and we can and do work on fixing issues all the time. The problem is more organizational, as with many large organizations that have small teams trying to get things done. That's all I can say for now.

As far as hiring more programmers, for one that doesn't necessarily help, since they'd have to spend a great amount of time getting acquainted with the code, for another the current economy at large is a roadblock.

I've seen the freeze you mention from time to time, and on my systems it is usually because the system is too busy to pump messages for a while after starting up the TouchSmart software. If I let it chug along for a bit, it usually starts behaving normally.

You're the second person (I think) who said that they bought the HP TouchSmart PC for the software, which is something that helps me with making certain points in discussions with the larger team.

I sure hope it's not going to take much longer to get another update out, but things have gotten a bit more complicated recently, so please bear with us a bit longer.

January 3, 2009 10:14 AM

How much longer?
i boought this for the new interface (touch) not for the great computer behind the touchscreen, because it aint all that! for the money i could have bought four computers with the same spec as this, i bought it for the touch and i want it working now, i sick of the snide remarks from the guys at work, "i have a bag of holes for sale" or my fav "how about a sinclare car, going cheap?"
get this thing working so i can blow theses people away with what could and should be a great computer

January 3, 2009 10:17 AM

ps
@jerry
done that xmas show off for the family, same thing happened to me, go figure!

January 3, 2009 10:35 AM

also, how do i delete touchsmart and reinstall it?

January 3, 2009 12:23 PM

Deleting it can be done through Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel (whatever that's called in Vista.)

Someone on this site figured out how to reinstall. If you search, I'm sure you can find it.

The other way to reinstall is to use the Recovery Manager in PC Help & Tools.

January 3, 2009 12:26 PM

ok done a HP photo update(its on they website)
and things got a tad better, i no longer have four entries (of which only one works)of albums (music and photos) so things are looking up.... maybe

January 3, 2009 12:28 PM

thanks geektieguy, crossed posted there, lol
i think the update saved me from the reinstall.

January 3, 2009 12:47 PM updated: January 3, 2009 12:48 PM

Oh, by the way, the HP TouchSmart software consists of several independent things in Add/Remove Programs.

- HP TouchSmart itself (the shell, if you want, which also includes Weather, Browser, RSS and Clock)
- Notes
- Calendar
- Music/Photo/Video

Each one has its own entry in Add/Remove Programs and its own entry in the Recovery Manager.

So my instructions for reinstall wouldn't have helped you with uninstalling / reinstalling the Photo app, just the shell.
