Hi all,

This is the first computer I have had with a flat screen monitor and the first all in one. i was wondering what the thoughts are on running a screensaver and about prolonging the life of the monitor(sleep mode, turning it off etc). I hope that isnt too vague. Any help is appreciated.

You'll get varied opinions on this, but I tend to turn off power to monitors after a while to be a little more "green" and throw PCs in to S3 standby or hibernate after a while of inactivity.

Some run a picture screen saver of family photos and use it as a large digital photo frame. Seems like a lot of power to burn for that, but to each their own.

Will turning it off prolong it's life? Probably, but it's more likely the PC components would fail before the CCFL in the monitor, or you'd want to replace it with something newer before any failure.

I have a couple opinions that I'll chime in her with as well.

I use a screensaver set to about 10 minutes and "blank screen" set to about 30 mins which works well for me since as an all in one, you can't just turn off the monitor without turning off the whole device. As far as sleep goes, I'm still having issues with it waking up immediately, so I don't use it. I do use hibernate but it sometimes randomly wakes up form that. And when it wakes up in the middle of the night, it is like a searchlight beacon that lights up the room like laying in a tanning bed. Kinda makes me think the police have come calling in the middle of the night...its a rude awakening.
That said, I usually turn mine off at night and when I'm going to be away for a while. It does not hurt a PC to shut it down when not in use.
As for teh light tubes, I really wish HP used LED's instead of CCFT as I have repaired many laptops...mostly Dell's that had light tube failure after only a couple years.
your first sign of light tube failure is usually a change in the screen color. In the case of the dells, it was a pinkish hue. You may also experience screen dimming. In any case, I would not want to be the one to have to replace a light tube on a TS.
So, the short answer is, if you want to save your screen and a little energy at the same time (although the TS IS energy star rated) turn it off.
Another thing to consider is dust infiltration. I have worked on some desktops that have pulled in enough dust over just a couple year time spans to create dust bunnies the size of my Blue Heeler. All PC's are dust magnets due to the fans and static electricity. They literally vacuum the air for you. If your PC is turned off while not in use, it is not pulling in any dust. So, another reason to turn it off.

I just purchased Magic Jack for long distance phone use but I need to keep my lapstop on in order to use this device. I turn the computer off overnight. Is this safe for my computer or will I burn it out??????????? HELP!!!!

Keeping a laptop plugged in for prolonged periods of time will eventually ruin the battery. (even new Li-Ion) As long as you unplug it and use it on battery every once in a while, you should be fine.

hiya, i love the bubbles screen saver, it amuses me for ages ... simple things and all.

A small worry of mine, is l use mine as a music centre for when doing other things in the room, and l have noticed that the screen saver does not come on when music playing.

So is it just me that loves those bubbles ??

One of my favorite screensavers is the picture screensaver. My father and brother recently went to italy and took over 4000 pictures. I created a folder of the pictures for my screensaver and a new picture displays every 20 seconds. Its really nice.

As a side note, Windows 7 allows you to create themes for your desktop so I did basically the same thing for windows 7. I created a folder of my favorite Italy pictures and they appear on my desktop every 10 minutes. I did the same for the screensaver.
