Is there a kit from HP that can be bought that would include the drive and included software, as if the TS panel originally came like that?  If not, what would be the best avenues for doing this to replace a dead internal optical drive?

It would help if you said what model Touchsmart you were talking about.

In general the Touchsmart DVD application will support Bluray IF the BR player is there during install and it's one of the many supported main line manufacturers they already use.

I am using a TS iq505 that originally came with dvd burner capability. The drive has since gone bad, and I just left it that way. So I figure, if I will go to all the trouble to go inside there to replace it, I might as well replace it with a br burner, which would be more useful to me. However, I have no idea where to get that part or what else would be involved to make it work.

There's a slot load BluRay unit that's been referenced before from here and on ebay, it works well from all reports.

The good news, if you install the DVD application clean, it can usually detect the BR drive and runs properly.

So there is no way to get a factory fresh part from HP as an *ahem* HP customer?

Sure at significantly higher cost, you would need to go through the HP Partsurfer process for one of the similar models that shipped with BluRay, i.e. the IQ5xx could be pointed to the part from the IQ846 since they're the same optical drive.
