Anyone know anything about what these guys are up to? Seems like they have some pretty nifty multitouch apps running on the Touchsmart already.

Looks pretty nifty.

Yes, but they are not alone on Multitouch for Touchsmarts:

- Canine Interactive: http://www.canineinteractive.com/design_monumental_touch_video.html

- Windows 7 beta with multitouch drivers developed by NextWindow doing multitouch on office, paint and internet explorer:
http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/29/useful-windows-7-touch-and-multi-touch-ges...

Now my big question is WHY hp is NOT giving US THAT DRIVERS UPDATE FOR OUR touchsmarts FOR FREE? Why should we wait until windows 7 when there already are people running multitouch apps on touchsmarts? come on hp, I paid $2000 for my iq 816, the least we expect is to have multitouch as a free update.

You don't need HP to give you the multi-touch drivers. Canine Interactive didn't get them from HP, neither did fingertapps.com. They are all using the currently available stuff from NextWindow.

The thing is that you don't just need the driver. You need apps as well. And the apps demoed above were not developed by HP.

What kind of multi-touch functionality are you after, other than what you've seen in those demos? Or do you want the demo software from the posts above? I'm curious.

[Update] I forgot to mention that the HP TouchSmart software does provide all the necessary infrastructure for multi-touch apps to be plugged in to the HP environment. There's a developer document available at this site that describes the details.

I'd like to see multi-touch functionality outside of the Touchsmart apps (i.e. window sizing, image manipulation, google maps zooming & panning with finger touch, etc).

Windows 7 should provide a more general approach, right? As much as I love the way the Touchsmart apps look, they're sluggish, and take up a massive amount of system resources unless you set them to shut down when not in use.

Another cool application that I came across that isn't multi-touch, but is unique simulates variable width brush strokes using a paintbrush on the Touchsmart screen: http://www.davidbrebner.com/paint.html (that's from the CTO of Fingertapps).

Wouldn't it be cool to combine that functionality with something like Artrage or Corel Painter? Imagine being able to "paint" with realistic media on your Touchsmart screen. You can do it with your fingertip now, but the brush width detection seems like something I didn't think would be feasible, given the optical nature of the NextSindow system.
