BIOSHD failure this morning.

My month-and-a-half old HP TouchSmart is DEAD!

Now we're talking about a PITA!!!

HP sending a new HD and a tech will be here on the 8th to exchange. Glad I bought the in-home repair warranty. Bad news is they will take the dead HD and not allow me to try to retrieve any data off of it.

I even offered to send it back at my own cost and they said NO! I would be charged $600.00 to $800.00 if I did so.

I am pissed to say the least.

Ouch...that hurts.

HP has a PDF of the service manual on their TS support download website which shows how to remove the hard drive and upgrade the RAM...presumably things that owners are permitted to do.

If you have access to a USB to SATA cable, you can access the document files on the drive by hooking it up to another PC. However, if you use a password logon and chose to make your documents private, you won't be able to access the files that way.

You may also want to see if the drive is completely connected. A hard bymp in shipping could have dislodged a connector which would cause drive problems.

However...Make sure doing so does not void your warranty before you try it.

Took out the drive and had it looked at.

DEAD / No retrievable data at all.

I have just been told that my touchsmart IQ512UK of which I only purchased last December has hard drive failure. So now I have to wait in while an engineer comes to collect it tomorrow (wednesday 5th August) pm, and take it back for repair. I have also lost all the files I had on it - most of them were music files of which I already have on c.d (thank god) But it makes me mad as I paid a lot of money for this computer - more than I ever would have thought of paying, but because it was an HP product I thought the expense was worth it.
disappointed in you HP.

are you guys talking about the error where you hit power button and the TS won't display anything, but you can hear the processor humming inside? Coz I just have the same problem... I can't get it work!

asdadiva,
If you have the BIOSHD error, your data is still on the drive. It is a firmware glitch that can be reapired with a special boot disk that can be downloaded from the HP support site for your particular model.
Before the tech destroys your data, ask him if you have a seagate drive and if the firmware update will fix it. Most likely it will and you will not lose your data.
