Just got my Touchsmart 300 back from HP . We've had nothing but problems since day 1 ( bought Nov. 2009 ) and asked for a replacement 300 . They repaired it .  Full OS recovery and HDD formatting was done . So basically the computer was put back in original ( as shipped ) condition . Norton keeps popping up asking me to install ; I want to un-install it . If I use the uninstall feature built in to the computer will it get 100% of Norton out ?

I am going to download MS Security Essentials once Norton is removed  .

Thanks in advance .

Go into add/remove programs, and ask it to uninstall Norton, yup, it's really that easy, if it asks what type say Complete.

Thank you Diane . I'd read somewhere that it was difficult to " completely " uninstall Norton . Apparently that applies only to cases when one has activtaed it for the free month trial and then tries to uninstall ?

That's a bad rap that Symantec no longer deserves, there were a few years where their product was awful, but in the past 4 years they have really cleaned up their act, and the versions on all the Touchsmart models, even the IQ770 is the easy to uninstall and plays nice version.

For the most part, the uninstall will remove Norton fairly well.  However, if you want to be geaky like me... it is not a "Complete" uninstall.  To entirely remove any app, you'll need to whack the registry hive.

I am not sure what version Norton AV you are running, but the hives will be similar.  See this article link to remove NAV.

OngDia, while I understand your personal desire to vanquish all signs that Symantec products ever existed, in 95% of all installations, the standard removal will just be fine.

Especially since that article is for Symantec Corporate Antivirus, it's not the correct process for the software that ships with Touchsmart PCs and notebooks.

Ok, kind of an off the topic question...

But is MS Security Essentials better than Norton?

I had their previous version, I guess, that was called Windows One Care and it worked ok.....

Anyone have any input?

Don't know if it is " better " , but it works for me and it is much " lighter " . I'd recommend it .

MS Security Essentials is barely related to OneCare, it's a rebuild from the ground up, and thought of quite highly by many people, myself included.

VERY good to know...

So you would have no hesitation in not putting Norton or others on and just using the MS Security Essentials?

:)

No hesitation whatsoever .

OneCare got the worse review when it was released. I think the MS Essential is a rebuild of OneCare.

AV companies such as Norton, McAfee and Kaspersky leap frog every year. If you want to read an unbias report, I would suggest visiting http://www.av-comparatives.org/ They test the AV for viruses that are polymophic, derivatives, and etc. They also test the AV program for performance.

They publish their Main Tests report every year. (http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/main-tests)

You can read the latest report publish in May here. (http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_report26.pdf)

Just keep in mind that "you get what you pay for." So if you use your PC for private information such as bills... Just pick a paid version for a better assurance level. Again.... "you get what you pay for."

I guess I am rather confused, OngDia...

According to the site in the link you provided (main one, others don't work) MS Security Essentials beat out both McAfee and Norton and tied with Kaspersky (and gave less false positives than Kaspersky)...

Your own data kind of defeated your point, don't you think? :)

There are more advanced Symantec/Norton removal tools available both on the HP.com Touchsmart forums and on the Symantec forums themselves.
