HP Customer Care quality is a very poor service, I'm italian and I've sent my TX2 about 4 times to the HP Assistance and everytime it return with a new issue, or worse, the same issues.
They change my monitor (that work great and not have problem) and install a monitor with 1 bad pixel (out of guarantee because the minimum is 2), it has a disturb on right side and the digitizer seem to have problem with pen (I am testing it because it can be a driver problem, but the old not have similar problem).
I have to take a seminary about Tablet PC interaction for student and teacher at my CS university and this problem is very annoying.
Except that, what is your touchsmart unit and why you can't calibrate your monitor (be more specific please) maybe I can help you (not sure, but if I can I do it with my pleasure)
I have sent in the touchsmart laptop into HP so many times and I'm not getting anywhere. I have done system restore, system recovery and hard disk scans. I lost Photoshop CS4 and Microsoft office, wich I can't get back after long phone conversations with the two product companies. I can't calibrate my screen and pen because I don't have the calibration tool. I originally sent in my computer because it would randomly click on stuff by itself (stylus issue) and it runs hot, molten hot. I get the computer back. The original issue was resolved, except the molten hot part, it had dead pixels, dents near the mouse pad area, and everything was in windows 98 appearance(which I resolved on my own). I send it in again. HP fixes the dead pixels, but not the dents, the molten hot issue, AND...It comes back not calibrated. I can't use the right 1/2" of the screen with the pen or my finger. The latch release button also sticks. And to top that off, the FEDEX delivery person drops my laptop in the box right in front of me, than dismisses it like it was nothing. Now I'm afraid to send it back in for it could get dropped again or worse! I need help. Customer Care sucks, and I'm getting no where. as a Sony product user, I want to go back!
Its the touchsmart tx2 with vista. Usually there's a screen calibration under the control panel but mine seems to not have it. I don't know if I'd call their IT people IT knowledgeable.
You are right about the part where you send it in and it comes back with the same issue plus more!! I can't believe it! I own 2 other Sony's, a desktop and a notebook and never had a single issue! Just the blue screen of death once on my laptop, but that was an easy fix compared to what HP is making this all out to be.
I think we may have had the same issue with the pen? My computer would think I was using the pen and it would close windows all the time, even when the pen was in a different room. After they replaced the monitor part twice, it seemed to get rid of that part, but now the latch button sticks majorly! I'm also disappointed that it looks like someone at HP sat on my laptop while it was there the first time! I mean come on! Really? Is it that hard to take care of something without making it worse? I am in the process of just getting a refund. I have had this computer since October and have used it maybe 12 hours total since then! Not right at all!
Mmmm one question, have you ever installed Windows 7 on your TX2?
Because the firmware installed with the driver for Win7 is totally different from the firmware for Vista and it causes problem with the touchscreen.
Also, maybe it's a stupid question, have you installed the driver for Vista or tried to reinstall it?
Anyway, if it's comfort you, I buy my TX2 in the end of january and I've used till mid - march, and I've received and it stop to go to assistance in the beginning of june.
The courier man is everytime the same (I've to say that the courier have always take care of my unit) and the last time he start to laught when he see me with exclamation "Yet you?"
I would love to have windows 7 on it. I was told I could upgrade to it for just the installation fee at best buy, but the HP representative told me I can't do it. I wonder which is true?
HP offers to his customer a free upgrade to Windows 7 for pc bought after june, 25 2009 but the free update program stop in february 2010 if I remember right.
You have to see when you request your free update (the old link to check it is this : http://www.hp.com/country/us/en/mda/windows7/upgrade/index_ww.html?jumpid=ex_... but now it say that the program is closed).
Anyway, except of recovery, have you ever install apart your TX2 driver for ntrig digitizer?
That sucks. I had no chance of upgrading since it was at HP.
I have the N-trig DuoSense Digitizer, yes.

Unfortunately the upgrade offer is long past, I have no idea why someone would tell you that Best Buy would do it for "just the installation fee"
That being said, there is nothing stopping you from buying your own Win7 Upgrade and doing it yourself, and JW's All-in-one Updater would make it a piece of cake to rebuild.
Customer service everywhere has gone downhill, personally I feel HP has not gone down as much as most, and I never found Sony to be that much better, but every expereince is different.

Ok so try to download the n-trig driver for your Vista version (32 or 64 bit):
Vista 32 bit:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp44001-44500/sp44087.exe
Vista 64 bit:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp44001-44500/sp44088.exe
Under install/remove software of your control panel check if the n-trig utility is installed, if yes, uninstall it before install the driver, else install directly the driver and follow the instruction.
After that tell us the result
