This usually means the BIOS will not support the CPU, HP is pretty stringent in locking the BIOS down to only similar to shipped CPU options.
If it can boot to a BOOTABLE CD or DVD and stay running without Windows, then a Windows reinstall might be in order, if it won't boot to the bootable media outside Windows, then it's not going to work.

Can a Touchsmart 300 be upgraded from an AMD Athlon II X2 235e to an X4 605e? It appears that the CPU's are interchangeable however when I power up it starts up ok but then freezes. Do I need to reinstall Windows 7 or is there another secret to this?
The processor I mentioned is an option on the machine. They offer a Dual Processor, 3 processor and quad processor all of which are interchangeable according to AMD and are offered as options on the Touchsmart 300.
Great.. that means it should work, but you didn't answer the question I asked about where it hangs..
I meant to add that it hangs during the Windows 7 splash screen. It does pass the HP diagnostics for CPU, Memory, etc using the F9 key during bootup. Go figure?
If you're passing boot then I'd consider just rebuilding the machine to be safe.
I spoke with the HP Support person and he said there is no reason why it shouldn't work. Except it doesn't! I went ahead and bought an msi motherboard with the same socket (AM3) and the CPU works great. I'm at a loss why it doesn't work in the touchsmart 300.
Install the original CPU, go to your Touchsmart support page and download the latest BIOS version for your system. Update your bios, then try the CPU again. The problem seems to be your BIOS is not current enough to work with the newer CPU.
Thanks much, my current BIOS version is 5.06 and there is a 5.10 which I'll download. Hopefully, this will resolve the issue.
So I tried installing the 605e again after the bios upgrade but it failed after the I signed on with my password and the main screen came up. It finally froze up like before. I did notice that when I removed the old chip (235e) there was heat sink paste on both the cpu and the heatsink, but after I removed the 605e, there was hardly any paste on the heatsink even tho I put the same amount on both chips. I am not wondering if it could be heat related since possibly the heat sink is not in full contact with the CPU even tho I tighten it down the same on both chips. Should I be applying the past on the heatsink side rather than on the CPU?
The CPU will definitely overheat (shutdown)if there is not enough / or the paste isn't applied properly. Clean all the old paste off the CPU and heatsink. Apply a very thin layer of paste on the CPU. Don't use any on the heatsink.
Just tried that and it still shuts down. I'm wondering if the Touchsmart that comes from the factory that has a 605e processor has a beefier heatsink? Cause the 605e work fine with my MSI motherboard and the OEM AMD heatsink. I'm about at my wits end on this one.
The Touchsmart can do the upgrade, so I wouldn't see why it is doing that.
Before it shuts down, is it doing anything out of ordinary, ie. fans spinning up really fast?
ChiefKyle,
I guess I should of said lockup since the hangs and I can't shut the system down normally. I was hoping the Bios would have the ability to show the CPU temp but it doesn't like some other MB's do. That would be a good way to see if it is indeed an overheating CPU problem.
Alrighty. So since it is locking and not shutting down, we have a easier battle ahead. There are two possible causes here.
(1) Memory - which I would assume is fine since it was working before the upgrade.
(2) Your current OS and Drivers are use to using two lanes of traffic and not four.
Solution, back up your data if you have it, and reload that thing. ;-)
Analogy: The road in front of your house has just been widened from two lanes to four lanes over night. Most people will continue to try to drive in the two lanes they know, but occasionally someone will try to get in the other lane...a wreck happens and the highway is shutdown.
Went ahead and got a fresh disk and reloaded the software. worked allright as long as the GUI didn't come up, but one the initial colored screen came up it locked up again. I'm about ready to pack it in and give up:( There is definitely something going on once the screen has to display glorius colors.
At this point, all I could think is memory. You could try pulling one stick at a time. Or contact tech support and see if they have had this issue. We've ruled out OS, BIOS, and overheating at this point. Not much left but memory, board, or CPU. My bet would be on memory at this stage.
