Hey! this has happened to me twice, the first time I sent my tablet in for repairs, they replaced the screen, the second time, it was after \I install n-trig<s multitouch driver. The multitouch driver seems to deactivate the digitizer, or at least destroy it<s effeciency, I managed tofix the pen issue by going to the hp support page and downloading the duosense driver from there (took away multi-touch) I would really enjoy a developper reviewing this issue so I can have the best of both worlds. I am certain this is the case and I changed my screen for nothing because I am using the same pen ive had since i bought the tablet.

Well I got no response :( but .. I'll post the solution. To help anyone else with a strange situation like I had.
YES .. the pen can go bad. Somehow mine did. Not only that not all TX2 pens are interchangeable. I have a TX2 2525 that pen does not work with my TX2 1020. I also went to Microcenter localy and tried the pen on the new TX2 that also did not work with my 1020.
Glad to have it fixed, but sheesh what I went though to figure that out.
