My Touch smart just keep on hanging all the time during startups.. Earlier it was during startup but now its during the running also.

Please let me know what to do? I am using Vista Home Premium that was factory installed.

Also let me know if I want to install win 7 for touch smart what configuration should I use?

And is there any way to restart computer while it's hanged... without switch off the whole coputer and then turning it on????

First off, installing Windows 7 on a sick Vista machine just gets you a sick Windows 7 machine, you need to resolve these issues first.

You need to go to HP and look in the support section for your model, if there's a hard drive update, that should be your most important update, after that make sure you're running Antivirus software that has up to date definitions and scan the system to be sure it's clean.

Well, with one caveat... make sure that you have the hard drive that the update is for... my IQ500 had a Toshiba drive in it, not the one with the update noted...

Otherwise, yes, correct. Run the av software, also anti-malware and registry checking software... then if you do an update/install, you may want to reinstall vista and then 7 (if you use the HP upgrade path) or you can just install Win7 on a clean install and then load the updated touchsmart software off of the HP website.

I am running Ultimate and like it a lot... my wife's TS524 is running the updated HP version (Home Premium). Either works fine.

The IQ5xx series does not have a video out via s-video, that would be why you're struggling, you'll need a USB to video out adapter.

The other option is, if you have an Xbox 360, it can act as a Media Extender with your IQ500 series and you can watch video through it, via the ethernet connection.

I've done that on mine several times...

I need another copy of a disk to upgrade my IQ504 from Vista to Windows 7. The "AntiVira" malware forced me to clean out my C: drive, but my upgrade disk is nowhere to be found.

HP has told me that due to Microsoft licensing restrictions, they cannot send me one, as they had reached their maximum allocation!!!

IF ANYBODY CAN HELP, I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!

You need to buy yourself a copy of Windows 7 if you've lost the upgrade disc with the key on it.  The upgrade CD was nothing special and a limited offer. You can use your own Win7 upgrade and then install the Touchsmart 3.x all in one installer from the forums here to make it easier.

Sorry, but that's the way it works.

I was told by HP that installing the retail Windows 7 version will disable the TouchSmart UI and applications. The HP version was specifically designed to accommodate the TouchSmart interface as well as several elements, including unique drivers. This was confirmed by the team at Geek Squad who had recently dealt with the malware and subsequent restoration.

That's incorrect, there is no special HP version of Win7.
The HP upgrade has a few helper apps that run for you, but you can upgrade from Vista yourself then install the updated Touchsmart 3.x applications from the HP website (once again, all by yourself) and everything will work fine.

Geek Squad has some very good people, and more than a few mediocre people and they are incorrect in their statement.

You can also use the Touchsmart 3.x all-in-one installer in the other threads, and that too, will work just fine.

That's great news! Thanks, Diane! I'm going to pick up a W7 upgrade today. Any advice with regard to the installation of the 3.x all-on-one installer? From what little I have gleaned from other posts, it is not without complications. Certainly, I will create a comprehensive back-up before proceeding. I noted your comment that the installer resides on the HP site, correct?

No, the Touchsmart 3.x all-in-one installer was put together by one of the members and is available via the forums here. It contains the same components that you can get at HP.com but in an easier to use format. If you want the newest versions of the 3.x applications, then you can go to hp.com on your own and install them one at a time.

Thanks, Diane...

I'm having second thoughts about upgrading (as I had initially, opting not to attempt while I had the disk). These forums are filled with posts in connection with upgrading issues.

With that in mind, I am at least hoping to get the latest update (series 2.0++++) of the Touchsmart software. For example, on my existing version, the "personalize" feature did not permit users to change the background. Nor could one choose which folders are watched by Music and Photo applications. A later fix provided the solution, but it no longer exists on the HP site.

Would you know how I can recover these antique v.2.0+++ updates? I picked it up in 2009. My Cyberlink drivers are also missing.

Thanks! Jake

Jake,
There should be no reason not to go to 3.x, I think you're reading way too much into the occasional problem posts. 2.x was cranky under Win7.

If you're staying with Vista from your Recovery DVDs, then 2.x will be fine, if you're updating it to Win7 3.x is the preferred Touchsmart app.

My copy of Ultimate was not purchased through HP, and it installed just fine.

I had more issues with TS applications and Win7 with my wife's free upgrade disk from HP than with my purchased (outside of HP supply chain) Win7 upgrade.

The TS 3.xx software upgrades are available on the HP website, and the aforementioned all in one installer works as well... so, it's whichever way you want to do it.

Thanks for the options and perspective on the upgrade process. From which site did you purchase your upgrade? Lastly, what version of the TouchSmart 3+++ did you apply, and is it currently discoverable via keyword search? My previous attempts have yielded few options. Thanks, again!

March 2, 2011 6:18 PM

Jake,
You can either use the all-in-one installer pointed to in this thread, it is by FAR the easiest way, or you can go to HP.com in the support section and input your model number, there's no magic keyword search, the updates are right there for you in support at HP when you put in model number and OS.

It doesn't matter where Pirate bought his Win7 upgrade, they're all the same, really they are.
