i was given brand new heaphones for christmas that use a line in and jack. When I plug them in the sound is working fine i can hear things through the speakers perfectly however I can't seem to get the computer to register the microphone. everytime i test it its only hearing throught the in build microphone.
How ever when i plug in a usb port pair that i have that are broken the computer automatically flicks over and lets me use the microphone on the that headset instead of the mebcam one.

How do i overide its demand that i use the webcam mic with this brand new set of headphones.

please help

There's no need to cross-post.
You don't mention what model you have, or what operating system you use, so there's little that can be offered other than generic advice.

The generic advice is adjust which input you're using from the Windows Sound control panel.

i have a HP touchsmart IQ 518a i think. Using the windows vista os.

i've tried doing everything that i can possibly think of in the generic sense.

Have you found the sound input panel? where you can choose recording sources from the speaker icon?

That's where you need to start.
