This may be coming from the TouchSmart Browser as it is trying to connect to the internet. IE does this as well, but your typically not auto launching IE at boot.
Try this... launch the TouchSmart SW, go into personalize and then into settings. Uncheck the Auto-Launch and Quick Launch options. This will stop TouchSmart from auto loading everytime you start the PC and to make sure the processes get closed when you press the close button. However, this also means it will take a bit to load when you want to use it. We do this as I do not want TouchSmart to use up resources unless it is running.
Another option is to turn off the TouchSmart Browser in Personalize.
Apan/ana my name is rawly, and i just joined i also have this problem, and it does go away after awhile. I was really concerned even blaming my wife that she dropped the screen, but no it was not that. I really dont know why it makes that noise but i'm gonna try what planepushr and madpup said to do...
say planepushr or madpup i have a concern maybe you or anyone else in this community can help me.
when i start my touchsmart homescreen the video tile is like resized too much..like if it is too zoomed in and I cant see everything... i realized if was too zoomed in becuz I cant see the webcam button. So basically i cant use the webcam on my videos tile in touchsmart. is there a way to resize the tile.
p.s. side note like 3 weeks ago, everytime i would turn on my pc, in my regular windows vista Desktop, I would see like a little icon/tile of the video tile that was suppose to be in my touchsmart homescreen...i figured out how to get rid of it, by forcing the touchsmart screen to come on (by clicking on the HP Touchsmart icon on my desktop and after it would load up i would go back to regular desktop and it would be gone.... dont know if it is related but anybody's input would greatly be appreciated. sorry so long(im very detailed)
If its the internet explorer page sound then turn the volume down and see what happens. If it goes away, then it is a "software" sound.
If the noise is still present, then it is a "hardware" sound. Now, for the first couple minutes, the hard drive is pretty active and will make some quiet clicking noises. If you are used to a typical desktop PC in which the fans usually make more noise than the touchsmart, you probably didn't hear your hard drive clicking. I hear mine more than I did when I had a desktop "tower" PC.
If the noise is loud, then something may be wrong. It is possible that one of the CPU or internal fans is bad but with a new computer, that is not as likely.
Try turning down the volume first and see if the noise goes away.

Not sure if you've solved your issues but make sure that your display resolution is set to 1680x1050 for the 500 series of TouchSmart PCs and that the dpi value is 96. The TouchSmart SW doesn't display well when not in the native resolution or default dpi value.
that little problem i had at start up where the video tile would comeout on windows desktop is gone and my video tile is back to normal... THANK YOU GUYZ>>>>>.......
someone guess what the problem was? hint is was so... simple
I guess I just had to update especially the hp updates
one question i have always wondered.. i would like different people's thoughts on this question? is it better to recieve ALL updates on automatic or do you pick which updates you want?
also if you install a microsoft update, is it possible that it will not always "JIVE" you know work with or be compatiable with thouchsmart
I just get scared since this thing was so.. expensive
I had the same problem (i.e. loud clicking noise on start up). I checked the cd drive after reading the first response and sure enough there were 2 cd's stuck in the drive. After I removed the cover of the drive and pulled out both cd's with needle nose pliers, no more sound!
