James,
The usual approach is to back up you data and do a full system recovery with the Recovery DVDs, if that doesn't resolve the issue you should call HP support and open a case, if needed they will initiate a return of the unit to them for repair.
Warranties are there for exactly this reason, to help you if there's a hardware issue.
Within the last month i purchased a brand new hp pavilion dv7 Select Edition laptop from hp.com. Within the first weed of ownership the screen was malfunctioning and i had to send it all the way back to hp to replace a part, the screen was not functioning at all. Needless to say that was very frustrating and unnerving. After receiving my fixed product after about 10 days, i began to use it again only to notice that the fingerprint reader is not being detected. Being again frustrated by this should-be flawless machine, i looked up solutions to this issue on Google and other various troubleshooting sites including hp forums. However, none of the solutions seem to help. The main things that has prevented me from solving this problem on my own:
There is no mention on "fingerprint reader" or "personal identification devices" on my device manager so i cannot even attempt to "roll back" the fingerprint reader driver which seemed to be the main solution i had found on various help sites.
Thanks for your time,
James
