Silly question from me but have you tried multiple disks? Have you tried rebooting?
HELP
CD DVD will not read anything. Any suggestions to fix the problem?
Graham
Make sure you are inserting the disk with the label side facing you. If you are inserting the disk with the data side towards you, it will not read.
Also, do you see the drive icon in "my computer"? If so, and you double click on it when a disk is inserted does the disk open? If so, then auto play is disabled.
How about in device manager? Do you see an icon for the DVD drive? Is there a "bang" (!) icon on it?
If you need help accessing device manager, let me know, I can help you further from there.

Yes David I tried boths sides of the disk just to see if I would get lucky. Yep have the icon in my computer. Checked out divice manager and in one box it states "this device is working properly". Even check for up date drivers, they were not required. Not sure what a "bang"is!.
Tried changing settings in auto play ................ still no luck.
Is this a common problem with the Touchsmart?
Any other ideas?

Sorry.. A "Bang" is a triangle icon with an exclamation point inside it. Sometimes my brain thinks faster than my fingers type. ;-)
Sounds like it may be a hardware problem necessitaing a call to HP support.

I had the same problem with mine after I had loaded a disk for my printer. The next day I went to use the cd player and it wasn't working. After searching everywhere and finding no answers, I went to HP online support and the person I spoke with said that there are some issues with the CD/DVD player not working after loading certain devices. One of them is a printer driver and also Itunes was mentioned. I would suggest going to the online support and talking directly to an agent as there are quite a few crucial steps in fixing the issue. You have to go into regedit for one. They can give you every step to fix it and it is pretty quick and easy to do. Mine has been working great ever since :)

Now, which touchsmart do you have? Did you install any programs recently like a CD/DVD burning program>?
Have you tried rebooting?
Which operating system are you running? Windows Vista or WIndows 7?
Fianlly, right click on "my computer" and choose "properties". On the left you will see a link for device manager. Click on it and you will see a list of your installed devices. Do you have an exclamation mark or any other symbol on your CD/DVD drive? Does it even show up in device manager?
Lets start with that and see what happens.

I got problem with my cd player. It starts working fine then after a while it stops working. If I reboot the machine it will be Ok until it does the same thing again. The thing that sucks is that you have to keep rebooting the machine to make it work. The wireless internet connection feature also works halfway. Starts fine then after a while it kicks you out and you have to boot the machine again to make it work again. This touchsmart computer would be so good if it does what is suppose to do. Great features but they only work halfway.

I have been having a problem with my DVD.
For several months. Rebooting or truning off computer changes nothing.
It won't play movies. I can play games. I don't burn anything. So I don't have burn software.
My DVD just won't SEE the disk at all. I have done everything David said on the post 12/23/09.. I don't have an exclamation mark.
I am using Windows Vista.

Mick C said: Hello My problem is this. I have a HP desktop Touchsmart 600 computer. All of the sudden it has stopped burning cd's and dvd"s. I have tried everything to no avail. It will download and play a cd just fine but I cannot burn one. I have recently downloaded I-tunes 10. When I try to open itunes it gives me the message- Registry seeeings used by I-tunes for the importing and burning cd's and dvd's are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other cd and dvd burning software. But my problem started before I downloaded I-tunes by a couple of days. I have since bought a new cd burner thinking my old burner was the problem. But this hasn't worked either. I have Nero 6 and it has worked great for years. I got in touch with Nero and they told me that said the Nero program on my computer is working fine. I used different types of blank dvd's and that didn't work either. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
It sounds a lot like something has messed with the registry sections for the burning as iTunes noted, I'd look in Microsoft support for what they call a "fixit" to help you get past this.
However if there is something that has damaged the registry, sometimes it's easier to just do a factory restore.
