Hello all-- I recently purchased the 1Q506, and am very happy with it, with the exception of one thing. The wireless internet, while by no means as sluggish as a 56k modem connection, is still significantly slower than my previous systems, which were almost instantly, blazingly responsive. I have full bars on my wireless network, and the card is functioning normally. Is this simply a quirk of the wireless card/system itself? Is it due to low memory or too many programs/visual features running at once? Is it a problem with my network/internet service provider? I can try tweaking all these elements, but I didn't know if it was even possible that they would affect the speed of my internet.

Thanks for your help!

Did you try the speed test at speakeasy.net on the TouchSmart vs. other machines on your home network ( http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ )?

Is your touchsmart in the same location as your other computers that had faster wireless (the same room that they used to be in) or in a different location in your house?

Certain building characteristics will affect the way a signal degrades as the waves pass through them. I can have a great signal and great quality in one area of my house, but move two feet and get a crappy signal.

What to do:

First, reboot your router. Turn it off/unplug it, wait a minute or two then turn it back on. Let your touchsmart reacquire the signal and see if things imporove (use geektieguys link above to check your speed)
If that doesn't work, head on over to HP's download site and download the latest wifi drivers for your model. Check device manager first to make sure you know which wifi card you have.
Download then install the new driver then see if it helps.
In my case, with a samsung UMPC that I own, the difference between two sets of drivers was dramatic.

It seems to have fixed itself, after I deleted unnecessary software and optimized my startup/background programs. Thanks for your suggestions, however!
