I have a crazy idea to buy a TouchSmart, disassemble it, remove the screen, and flush-mount it in the wall with the rest of the computer sitting on the other side of the wall a couple of feet away.  Aside from the obvious "you'll violate your warranty" concerns, is this even remotely possible for an overly enthusiastic DIYer?  Is the touch screen physically capable of being removed?  Is it possible to connect the screen over a cable a couple of feet long?  What are the ventilation requirements for the screen?  How deep is the screen hardware?

Much thanks for any constructive feedback!

Sounds like you've got money to burn. It won't be easy, especially since the ribbon cable connecting the graphics card to the LCD panel is extremely short. And then there are the ribbon cables of the touchscreen hardware to consider. Actually, the more I consider this, I don't think it will be feasible.

I'm gonna buy an old Apple Lisa just to turn it into a fish tank for one single Beta and tell people that I am running Windows 7 on an Apple Lisa.

You could mount the entire unit into the wall but you would have to ventilate it well. The vent on the TS is at the top of the unit. Also the bezel curves at the bottom which wouldn't allow for a perfectly flush installation. If you are handy you could mount it with the face bezel flush with the wall. The space from the screen to the top of the bezel is 4 millimeters so it would be impossible to mount it perfectly flush into the wall. And again, you would have to also install a venting fan into the wall above the unit to keep the hot air out. Not only would your unit burn up, you may even catch your wall on fire. So I have to agree with Geek and say that it isn't feasible. Perhaps if it is a fake wall like a presentation wall or one of those news room walls it would be fun to try. But not in a real wall.

You would be better off buying an LCD display with touchscreen or visit this site http://www.nextwindow.com . These are the same guys that make the touch screen for the HPTS.

I just bought my 526 and I'm flush mounting it in the wall. I am rotating it 90 deg and mounting it as a digital picture frame. It will be framed with nice molding and should be nice when complete. Most paintings have frames that protrude 2 to 3 inches so it will match the rest of the items hanging.
Now all I have to do is get it to talk to me like Hal.

Hi Wirenuting,

Cool. How do you intend to address heat issues? Please take pictures and send notes on how to do this and the obstacles you incur along the way.

Thanks!

Well I was told I can't rotate the desktop 90 deg. That is true once you update the drivers. With a "fix" you can continue to rotate. But the TouchSmart software does not support that setup. It dumps you back to the desktop. So I'm back to a Landscape view.
The heat issue was an easy fix. The wall behind the computer is wide open closet space, so if needed I would have removed and rebuilt the factory back cover so I could install fan cooling. But thats a bust anyway now.
The only obstacles I have is the wall and installing a pull out shelf for it. I want it flush mounted. But in Landscape I'm missing it by 2 inches. It will be a close fit and yes I'm taking pics of the new mounting frame and slide out.
I'm and electrician by trade,,, and I sure wish I was a better trim carptender..
LoL

I'll let you know how it goes.

:-)
