I am having trouble setting up my HP Touchsmart 23 desk top to see my direct tv cable. How can I set this up.

What part are you having trouble with?
DirecTV RCA jacks out to Touchsmart RCA AV in.

However many users have reported difficulty in getting it properly set up with remote codes. DirecTV is not "cable"

Hi,
My new job has me working for a (among other things) a Dish AND DirecTV reseller... so I pulled the book out and am looking now:

On DirecTV:
The newer HD receivers have HDMI outs as well as S-video and RCA outs

The older std receivers have RCA and S-video and composite coax outs

Been one of my concerns about going satellite here because I am using my analog cable input with no problems on my TS now, but don't want to wreck my DVR and other stuff with it...

The problem is that almost none of the Touchsmart units have HDMI in and as far as I know it's not usable in Media Center, but I'd love to be proved wrong.

I think one of the issues is that DirecTV uses an RF remote not ir based on what I hear out there.

The new 610 model has two HDMI in. I think some of the previous 600 line had one HDMI in, depending on what sub-model you pick.

Diane,
that is correct regarding the RF remotes... they do that so that they can have up to 2 tvs (more really, with backfeeding) using one receiver in different rooms. RF travels through walls, IR doesn't.

That being said... I think it's a hybrid remote... I don't have one in front of me, but I vaguely recall seeing IR LEDs on the end of it... I'll look on Tuesday when I get in to work.

And yeah GTG, that was what I remembered about the 600 series, that they did have HDMI ins... sadly, my old 507 doesn't...

I am kind of curious, though, how well the HDMI worked with something like the XBox360 and game play... did they get the lag issues worked out with it (so it would work in a space limited environment, like a dorm room or a studio apt?)

Yes, the HDMI input is run in "game mode" without any buffering, that's why I wasn't sure if it was usuable inside Windows Media Center as a TV source.

The HDMI in(s) go straight to the scaler board and then from there onto the LCD panel, i.e. they don't pass through the PC at all. So they can't be used as a source for Media Center TV recording.
