Quick history: Purchased in Nov 2008; HD was a Seagate that bricked in Oct 2009.  I paid someone to unbrick my HD and install the firmware update.  (I didn't want to lose my data, so I didn't bother going through HP).

Jan 2010: Upgraded to Windows 7.  Everything was going perfect until...

June 2011: About a week ago computer started acting up again.  It started freezing up after being on for only a few minutes.  I could still get into programs, but it would freeze about 5-10 minutes later.

I finally got sick of this and decided to do a system recovery with the partition.  I'm not worried about my data because its saved on Carbonite.  System recover worked and I did some updates, then reinstalled Windows 7 (its an upgrade CD), reinstalled Office 2007, one of my printer drivers... things were going lighting fast and smooth.

Started downloading my data from Carbonite and this was going fine I was about 4-5 days in (takes forever to download everything)... then my computer completely froze.  I couldn't get it to start back up, so I finally held the power botton long enough for it to turn off.  I gave it a few minutes and then turned it on... and then when prompted I clicked to start it normal mode .. got to the screen where I enter my password... entered it and then it went into a check disc mode and started looping... I get to the screen type in my password and then it starts checking disc again.

Frustrated I decided to go ahead and purchase another HD (WD Caviar Green SATA 500GB) and installed it.  I popped in my recovery CD and finally got it to work after going to the boot menu and picking for it to boot from the CDDVD drive.  It does whatever it does with disc 1, then pops it out and asks me to insert disc 2..... then nothing happens... I've tried reinserting disc 2 a few times.. cleaning it ... started over about 10 times... nothing.

Do you think if I order the discs from HP they will work?  I'm thinking of reinstalling the original HD and trying the partition recovery again... just so I can try and get some work done.  I hate having to use my netbook to work off of.  I miss my HUGE screen.  :D

Also, at this point I don't really care if my screen remains touchscreen or not.  I rarely used it unless I was having problems with my keyboard.  As of two weeks ago it was still working though...

(sorry for the novel...)

Always be sure you have no additional USB devices or drives on the system when restoring it, that can cause all sorts of weird issues.

If you have access to an external USB DVD drive I would try that first, if not there's a good possibility that the HP produced DVDs might work better, but it's not 100% sure. I have seen home made discs fail and HP provided discs work for systems in the past.

Diane-

Thank you sooo much!! I went ahead and bought a new external dvd rom drive and tried that and it worked!... I'm now in the process of reinstalling most of my software and so far, so good. I'll update later in the week on my progress since it'll be days before everything is finished.

I'm hoping that now that I have this newer HD that will take care of the problem of my computer freezing up. Thanks once again.
