Honestly, I am starting to lose my patience with the HP Touchsmart software. This is such a lovely, robust machine, and this software seems riddled with bugs...

I installed all the Touchsmart updates this morning. After doing this, my music app in the Touchsmart software no longer works properly. When I choose this view:

Clicking on the title of the song or the play button no longer has any effect. I can click with my finger or my mouse until I'm blue in the face, and there's no response. The only way to play my music is through normal view.

Also, my music app does not retain the iTunes setting after rebooting my machine, as already noted here. Can I revert the update somehow? Is there a fix for these issues?

Just an update-- my Touchsmart software appears to be retaining the iTunes setting now, after completely closing the software through Task Manager and rebooting. However, I am still having the music bug. Any thoughts?

Ugh, another update, but bad news: I talked to HP support about this issue; they suggested I System Restore to undo the upgrades. Now, my Music and Photo tiles won't work at all. They attempt to load up when HP Touchsmart starts, and then disappear. As soon as I reactivate them, I receive an error stating "SmartCenter has stopped working", and the HP Touchsmart program closes. I am now attempting to reinstall the software with my restore cds...

I gave up on iTunes.

Nothing but errors when launched.

If I open it on my side of the PC, it sends errors from my wife's user side.

POS.

final update:

Attempting to reinstall the HP Touchsmart Music/Photo/Video software with recovery manager was not successful; it informed me that I needed to physically uninstall the software through Windows' Add Programs feature before I could reinstall, so I did so. The program would say it was reinstalling, but would then instantly finish and ask for a reboot, upon which I would discover nothing had been done. Now I had absolutely no Hp Touchsmart Music/Photo/Video app at all, and didn't know how to get it back. I began to wonder if something was wrong with my recovery cds, but I would soon come to find that recovery cds apparently have nothing to do with reinstalling this particular part of the HP Touchsmart software.

I decided to undo the system restore, in the hopes that it would at least restore basic functionality to the HP Touchsmart program. Alas, while the HP Touchsmart Music/Photo/Video app reappeared in Add Programs, it had the same problem and the same error.

I contacted HP tech support through chat and spoke again with Karen, a very nice and helpful lady (on a side note, all other times I have used chat tech support, under level of expertise, I have picked Beginner or Intermediate, and gotten someone who seemed to know less than I did. This time I chose Expert, and got Karen, who was excellent. Coincidence?). After all we had done, Karen was as boggled as I was, and was about to suggest a full system recovery when I decided, just for the heck of it, to try recovery manager once more. This time, the reinstall actually took some time, and I saw two additional programs running that said "Installing HP Touchsmart Music/Photo/Video" and "Installing HP Touchsmart Media". However, it did not ask for my recovery cds, leading me to believe that it is able to restore some programs without them. I allowed it to finish, rebooted, and my entire HP Touchsmart suite was up and running again, no errors, no bugs.

My conclusion is that to solve this problem, the best solution would be to run recovery manager and reinstall HP Touchsmart Music/Photo/Video. My only explanation for why this didn't work the first few times I tried it was that the machine was in some kind of bad state from the system restores, errors, and various states of updates to the HP Touchsmart software. Karen and I agreed that for the time being, I will avoid the Music/Video/Photo upgrade, and hope that the Spring update with the new software being shipped on new machines will address this bug.

I also asked her about the keyboard/mouse/total system lockup issue, discussed in the Hardware forum here, and she said this issue has been fixed with a Vista hotfix called "sp37540.exe". This resolves freezing issues when Touchsmart is open or running in the background. You can search for it on hp.com.

I also asked her about the "rundll32.exe has stopped running" error, and she said this is a Vista error caused by a background task. Users need to identify which background task is causing it for them to help. If it happens to me again, I will try to do so.

I've tried reinstalling both the Touchsmart 2.0 software and the Music/Photo/Video, but I'm still getting the the same "stopped working" error message. This is not a major problem; I can listen to music via my iTunes library, but it's very annoying to know that I spent money on a feature that does not work. I'm not feeling very good about HP at the moment. Does anyone know if (when?)there will be an update that fixes this problem?

Update: I called tech support and had the help of a very nice person (Florence). We went through an uninstall/reinstall process for TouchSmart 2.0, Photo/Music/Video, Calendar, and Notes. At the end of that process, I was able to click on an album's artwork, and the music played! I thanked Florence and ended the phone connection. Five minutes later, the problem was back! The odd thing is that if I go to the Songs listings and click on an individual song, it will play. But I can't play anything via the Albums or Artists listing.

I'm having the same problems too. I'm wondering if it's because my music is on an external drive. Are people using the "iTunes Library" setting? That was the only way I could get the Music App to utilize the categories properly e.g. Album, Artist, etc., for my mp3s on my external drive.

Which Public folder? I tried copying an album to "Public Music," but it still doesn't play via the Touchsmart music program.

I copied a bunch of files to C:\Users\Public\Public Music -- still doesn't work for you?

Same here. First few months, no problems. Suddenly music stops playing. Uninstalled touchsmart via windows, then reinstalled via hp recovery manager (several attempts - the recovery programme is itself buggy it seems as described by others above). No luck.

I am also experiencing problems with HP update which identifies new updates that it cannot install.

After this long process I can now identify one source of hope: IT WILL PLAY WAV FILES, but no longer mp3 ones. This means that the touchsmart music app can certainly "talk" to the speakers. All other music programmes play fine - media player, spotify etc.

Jump forward 8 months. I've been having the same problem - music program crashes then goes away when you try to make an album selection. I've had the problem since day one and spent days trying to work around it. HP is no help. Uninstalling a program and reinstalling it via recovery is not a fun thing to do in the middle of a party. I've updated every HP and Windows update but they don't seem to even realize how big a problem it is and they aren't addressing it. If anyone has any insight please reply.

Uninstalling and reinstalling via recovery is a pain, I agree, but there's a huge downside to that, you're getting the oldest possible version of the application, you need to be sure to go to HP.com and get the latest updates for the application for your model from there. You want to concentrate on just the biggest of the Touchsmart applications. Anytime that you uninstall only sections of the Touchsmart interface and then reinstall other sections, it's prone to corruption.

In general the application runs fairly reliably, but the early revisions were buggy in my expereince. The 2.x versions will not work well with iTunes integration, or with network drives, if the music is local, it's far more stable.

Thanks Diane. After I download the latest version of the TouchSmart application, how do I get the recovery software updated to it. I don't see this going away.

You don't... the recovery partition is the "as new as the day it left the HP factory".

At the moment the current version of the Touchsmart MVP (Music Video Photos) update is sp43198.exe at 10MB for version 2.9.2.3214. I'm not running the Vista version anymore, so I can't tell you if it's the full install or it needs to update the existing install.

So everytime the program crashes - which is almost every time I use it. I will have to uninstall it, recover it, then download an update, then install that?

I've been reading huge rants on this forum. I'm right there with them.

One more thing, the HP Advisor is always looking for updates and never finds any. Why is that if there is a new version of the App available?

I don't know what else to tell you, but the logic of uninstalling and reinstalling every time you crash is extreme. I can't answer the question on the Advisor, but there are newer versions of the advisor also should you decide to look for it.

My IQ506t when it was running Vista worked fine as far as music in the Touchsmart interface, I'd suspect there's something that is killing the app somewhere in your music collection, a bad tag, file name that's too long, etc, but that's going to be a tough one to fine.

Also keep in mind that people that have machines that are running ok rarely come out to post that things are fine, so the results in almost any forum will have a higher then normal rant to rave ratio.
