wow. will wait for those pictures!
I decided to wall mount my HP Touchsmart in my Kitchen. I bought the IQ804 model when they offered the 25% off coupon which allowed me to save over $600.00 and get the bigger screen 25.5". I already have the wall mount adapter and am waiting on my computer to arrive which should be tommorrow. I am also waiting on my actual wallmount which I got off ebay for only $30.00, a 50ft Spdif audio cable, and a 16ft usb cable used for x10 lighting.
I am a bit of a closet nerd and recently built a new house last feb. which allowed me to geek out my house. I have x10 automatic lighting system which is used to control every light in my home either via remote control or pc.
I also have installed in wall speakers that fit plush in the wall. I have the ususal in my living room but also have in wall speakers in my vaulted ceiling in my kitchen, bedroom and master bathroom. The living room and kitchen is controlled by one reciever and the bedroom and master bathroom are controled by another.
My wife and I were recently at Bestbuy and I showed her the HP Touchsmart. I joked how neat it would be to have in our kitchen how she could look up a recipe or control the music throughout the house all by touch, I showed her the HP software like the notes and weather and she said I could do as long as it was wall mounted. I still thought she was kidding being such an expensive project but she said go for it so I jumped on the opportunity.
Through the next few weeks I am going to show and explain how I am mounting this PC and what I am using it for. I plan on using it for the following:
-All of the built in HP Touchsmart applications of course
-x10 automatic lighting, so I can control all of my light in my home
-Logmein (www.logmein.com) Which will allow free remote access as well as a way to control lighting from anywhere
-Napster, havn't decided if I want to use via Media Center or Actual program
-Netflix, using the watch now feature
-Slingbox, since I don't see a way of getting HD I am planning on using our slingbox for TV
-Videochat, I plan on using MSN messenger but am going to try some more, how cool would that be if you screen rings and your talking liket he Jetsons
- Ambient Design’s ArtRage, this is a program that allows you to actually use a paint brush which I would enjoy being that I used to paint.
-Games, I am going to look for games that would be perfect for the touchscreen feature, I have already thought about entertaining guest with a game such as win los or draw.
Any ideas would be apreciated or advice if you have had experience. I am going to try and include pictures while my project is taking place as well as a final product....stay posted
That is a very intresting project. I am planning something very similar. Are you using your itunes account, and have you been able to enbed any apps.

Makes me wish i had a bigger kitchen. Actually...with my 800 series, I even need a bigger desk.
Great job with the install though and the pictures look really cool.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!
Hey chuck,
nice one here. that's one big touchsmart you got there. how's the swiveling arm mount? does the tilting pretty much remain solid?
also, did you cut off the feet?
thanks.

Thanks, yeah the mount is pretty sturdy, I think I need a stronger one if I want to pull the monitor out, I have just been leaving it plush on the wall and using in for directional purposes, I may get a different one down the road but so far so good.
The wall mount adapter I bought directly from hp actually came with pieces to fill in the gap when I removed the legs. I read online on different sites that the legs did not come off but that is completely untrue. Maybe the 500 model doesn't allow it but the 800 defenitly does. I had to take off the 13 screws to get the back off but the directions on the website:
take you step by step including how to remove the legs and replace them with the fillers. We have really ben enjoying it being in our kitchen though. I especially like using napster, having any song at any time ready to stream.
My wife also uses it to cook and find recipes, I even scanned her own recipes and saved the to the PC ready for her to bring up at any time. I also just last week bought a skype in/out number and use it as a house phone being that they only charge 30.00 a year, it also allows us to video chat, I just talked my parents into getting a Touchsmart so we have been enjoying that.

I actually don't use my Itunes account, I mostly use Napster. Its $12.95 a month and allows to stream almost any song you can think of, I really love it. Its so organized and easy to find you artist or song. It even has a billboard option where you can go to the top 100 hits of any year all the way back to like 1955. It also has top albums on the billboard section to if you want to hear the whole album. It really is amazing if you love music.
I am sorry what do you mean by embedded apps, like in the Touchsmart software as in shorcuts?
sounds cool. i also have my touchsmart 500 mounted in my kitchen. we use it pretty much as an all in one PC in the kitchen:
internet
kids games
TV [i use sony locationfree instead since i have a sony PSP and can use it there too]
touchsmart software for the pics, videos, music and touch show offs :)
i also just this weekend installed windows 7 beta in it. i partitioned the drive to have a secondary 40GB space and i installed windows 7 there and made it a dual-boot so i won't be messing up the vista setup. so far so good. you would really enjoy the multi touch capability in the windows media center.
there are some quirks and bugs on the TS software as i tried re-installing it form the recovery DVDs. one of the quirks is i can't resize the tiles now. another one is i lost the display for the Music, photo and video tiles [might be easy to fix].
it would be best to use a sturdier arm-mount so you can move the display around. might be helpful if you're cooking as you can swivel/pan it to your direction.
did you plug in the spdif out to a receiver to drive those ceiling speakers? do you need to remove the spdif if you want to use the internal HP speakers?
right now i am using a separate powered 2.1 speaker/sub and i have to remove the connection to the HP if i want to use the internal speakers.

Yeah I bought a 50 ft SPDIF cable and being that my ceiling speakers are considered multi-roomed the SPDIF won't work on them unless I wanted to unhook my speakers everytime, plus I use a Logitech Remote and didn't want to mess with all of that.
I found another way of running the sound through the ceiling speakers but I think the sound is better from the actual Touchsmart PC. I wish there was a way to run both but I didn't see it. If anyone knows of a way please let me know/
I would love to see some pics of your setup as well.
i posted some pictures here:

kitchen is to the right side of the TS. dining area is to the left side... that counter space we use for normal day eating and sitting down instead in the dining area.
excuse the cables for now as i wasnt able to put them inside the wall. not good DIY person :)
I would love to see how a skype to skype video call would be fulls screen. Skype is better than msn video calls. also I would love to see how streaming audio from like pandora or xm's site works and sounds. also If i read it write the touchsmart has a fm tuner so it would be cool to see the radio feature (kinda old school i know). I am really impressed. I would love the idea of this on a home bar for like a jukebox/video poker player/karakoe machine(with the words on the screen or have the cam record). heck if this thing was on the wall at a home bar with the ps3 or wii hooked up to it that would be aweosome. I had never heard of the x10 lighting system you use which is awsome.. what else would be cool is if you had a wireless webcam as a security camera outside that would be cool to have on there as well.. like if there is someone approaching the front door. it would display automaticly on the touchsmart.
yup all those that you said is possible except connecting a PS3/Wii into the touchsmart as it does not accept AV inputs. you can probably buy a dongle that can accept AV inputs [RCA]...
the wireless webcam/securitycam is a good idea :) but for a small house it's always faster just to look at the window or by the door opening :)
- skype to skype video calls are great. no stutter
- pandora streaming is great.
- you can even have hulu/web tv streams
plus with windows 7 beta, windows media center is much better! multi touch too.
great machine i would say.
there are no HDMI inputs or HD AV inputs at all? wow.. that is surprising. now i think of it that was said in the video. that makes no sense though.. have a computer with a tv tuner but not have the benefit of HD video? stupid.. another cool idea is getting a HP tx2 and remoteing in it remotely.. like walking around the house with the same multitouch/tablet functionaty
UPDATE! I finally got my music playing through my inwall speaker in my vaulted ceiling speakers and living room inwall speakers. I first tried using the SPDIF cable but my Harmon Kardon receiver wouldn't allow the SPDIF to work in multi-room which is how my kitchen speakers were working. I decided to buy a 75 ft normal RCA audio cable and use the adapter that came with my Touchsmart.
I then ran into another problem. I still wanted to have sound coming from the Touchsmart speakers as well as the wall speakers. What was happening was if I plugged in the rca audio cable all the ways into the Touchsmart it would disable the internal speakers, so what I did was plug in the cable into the audio in port halfway/loosely so it tricks it and plays through both. The only downside is it only plays through one channel in the kitchen but the living room sounds great (having a subwoofer hooked up) and I am still able to get sound from the PC itself. If I plug the wire in all the way into the PC it plays through both channels in the ceiling but I wanted to have sound coming out of Touchsmart's speakers more than the ceiling.
I have a Logitech Harmony remote so I simply programed the remote by adding another custom activity and calling in "PC MUSIC". Basically when I hit the "PC MUSIC" button all it does is turns the receiver to the proper output which is video 2 and turns everything else off. The nice thing about my inparticular reciever is that the multi-room function can always stay on even if the other speakers are turned off so sound is always coming from the kitchen speaker and PC even if the TV is off in the living room and no sound is coming out those speakers also not conflicting with the regular commands of the remote control.
For my next project I am trying to think of a way to clone the screen to show in my living room pc since I already have sound. Also down the road I would like to install outdoor speakers and need to find a way to set that up so the outdoor speakers play what is coming from the Touchsmart. I was thinking wireless speakers and pluging the wireless reciever in to the surround sound reciever but we will see. Any suggestions on these two future projects please let me know.

Hi Chuck,
check out my post:

I used a bluetooth receiver to do the wireless speaker part. it might be applicable to you.
