The general answer is "do so at your own risk"
The usual caveats are that you need to use a CPU that the systems came with, and be ready for issues if the BIOS doesn't like the stepping revision of the CPU.
If you've already got the CPU, give it a shot, if you purchase then be wary.
I'd also be very hesitant to changing number of cores and increased power draw, both of those would have me stepping back and not doing the upgrade.
I've got a 600-1055 that's beginning to show it's age. I'm planning on tossing another 4GB of RAM in, but I'd also like to upgrade the CPU while I'm in there. According to the specs it'll take a Penryn C2D @ 35W, 800 or 1066FSB. I'm wondering if the MB could handle a 45W Penrun C2Q Q9000 @ 45W, or if I'd run into power issues or a BIOS problem. I searched a bit and have come up with zilch for this particular mobo / cpu combo, and this just isn't my area of expertise. Any advice appreciated! :)
