In a recent study, the urban development experts have come to the conclusion that the urban environmental health is degrading slowly and steadily.  The suggestions made by the urban development experts to stabilize and control the level of degradation can be summarized as follows:

1.Efficient land-use in Cochin can be promoted by limiting the growth of the city in a haphazard manner by planning a greenbelt of agricultural and recreational land around the various limits of the city.
2.City planners should plan for a population of 30,000 to 50,000 people in each ward and provide the necessary urban amenities such as museums, art centers, schools, hospitals etc.  This will restrict the movement of people to other areas of the urban centers
3.The planners should determine in advance, where development would take place.  This protects property values and prevents chaotic development in which the lowest uses drive out the better ones.
4.The places of historical and cultural value as well as aesthetically and ecologically valuable sites should be preserved from the overcrowding and congestion seen in the urban centers
5.The open spaces of Cochin City should be redesigned with adequate provision of sidewalk along the important roads.
6.The width of the arterial roads should be increased.
7.Provision for neighborhood parks, shelter etc., should be made.

If the above said measures are implemented to properly develop  City will not be the same in the long run.  It will develop further and will be able to attract more investments.  Consider the planned development of the Container Terminal at Vallarpadom.  This one project has had a cascading effect on different other investments.
