Here's a little treat for some of you: HP has published a softpaq that updates the TouchSmart 5.0 software to 5.1, a version that's not shipping on any hardware yet! You heard it here first, folks!

It's mostly an update that fixes various minor bugs in 5.0 that were discovered after shipping. But there's also one new feature: support for the mouse scroll wheel.

Here's a direct link to the softpaq file download: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54501-55000/sp54879.exe

If an enterprising soul were to try to use this to upgrade from 3.0 or 4.0 versions, they would only get the new "shell"/"framework" from this softpaq. There are no apps included in this package. Your mileage may vary, etc. I'm interested in hearing back from anyone who tries such a thing, unsupported as it is.

Thanks so much for the heads up!

Just gave this a try.  It effectively gives the TouchSmart 4 user (at least on my Touch Smart 610-1147c) Touchsmart 5.1.  As you mentioned, there are none of the new versions of the apps, but at least most of the apps from version 4 seem to be working fine.

The hacked in version of free version of Paint it! doesn't work though - it goes into some kind of loop - and can only be exited by going into the task manager.  I'm wondering if this isn't just a question of changing the registry setting to make it work.

I can now move regular windows apps into the Carousel (super cool!) - this will make the system a lot more useable - as this is my daughter's first computer.  We don't have to break the Touchsmart paradigm to run certain programs.

I will continue to play around with this - and report on any other issues I see with just installing the Softpaq over TS 4.

Thanks again!

BTW - Do also have a link or article on how to build the parallax backgrounds?  Would love to do some customized family picture backgrounds.

Hey venture,

Thanks for the update.

Paint it! has always been a bit troublesome, and I think HP won't be shipping it anymore or provide updates for it. I don't think any registry settings will fix much.

Integrating more closely with Windows was the primary goal for TouchSmart 5.0/5.1, so I'm glad to hear that it's useful to you.

Building parallax backgrounds isn't too hard. Look into the Backgrounds folder of where the TouchSmart software is installed and take a look at the various XML files in there. They describe the layers of the parallax. It should be fairly easy to figure out. The hardest part is producing background images that tile well. The left and right edge of each image have to match precisely because they will be tiled together. If you need more, I can send you something more via private messaging.

Any chance this would work on the older 810?

November 26, 2011 12:52 PM

I have it running on an IQ506, so IQ810 should work as well. Not supported and all that, so do it at your own risk, etc.

November 26, 2011 1:42 PM

thanks. i' still running v3... would i need to go to v4 first?

November 26, 2011 2:51 PM

Not necessarily. The shell upgrade should work from any lower version, but I've never tried going from 3.0 to 5.1. If you go to 4.0 first, I assume you'd use the new all-in-one updater which also gets you all the 4.0 app versions. If you don't use it you'd be running 3.0 apps with the 5.1 shell. That should work in general, but for example the music app won't be controllable anymore since in 4.0 the media control element was taken out of the shell and put into the music app itself.

November 26, 2011 4:33 PM

since i have the 810, do you think teh updated will work? couldn't really find any later posts about it. do you know where it is?

November 26, 2011 7:11 PM

The link in my initial post still seems to work. That's what you need to upgrade to 5.1, if you are adventurous enough to try it. I think it will work, in the sense that it will probably install correctly and function as designed. But since you'll be installing it on an 810 the overall suite of apps may feel a little odd in the new shell.

November 27, 2011 2:45 PM

one last question, because i definitely want the music app... seems like i should go to v4 first. what did you mean by this:

If you go to 4.0 first, I assume you'd use the new all-in-one updater which also gets you all the 4.0 app versions.

were can i find that?

thanks.

The all-in-one updater is this one: http://www.touchsmartdevzone.com/download/4070/TS4Upgrade/

November 28, 2011 6:56 PM

This rocked. both updates went perfectly. i really like the v5 stuff... nice integration between windows and the TS software. Be a nice workaround until we see what Win8 looks like on this device (i have the 810). Could of questions you may be able to answer:

1. i got the webcam to work by installing an older version after going through the upgrade. let me know if i should have done something different.
2. The Facebook app takes me to the approval log-in screen, but keeps telling me i'm putting in the wrong password. But i can log in fine from IE. thoughts?
3. is there a TS browser app any longer?
4. I only tried one 'magnet' in v4 before i upgraded to v5. It's still there, but there doesn't seem to be a way to create any new ones?

Seriously... thanks for all the help. This really makes my systme more useful than ever.

November 28, 2011 8:19 PM

I'll give it a try:

1. That's probably fine. If it works, that's all that matters.

2. Maybe you need to de-authorize the app on facebook.com and then try logging in again?

3. The TS browser is part of the 4.0 upgrade package. Maybe it didn't register itself as a tile? You may have to drag a shortcut to it from the All Programs menu into the carousel.

4. The "magic menu" (tap on canvas) should let you create graffiti magnets. Music/Video/Photo apps should allow for magnet creation as well. Twitter and Weather app too. Can't remember if Recipe Box does.

November 28, 2011 11:24 PM

cool. got it all to work accept facebook. now it won't even load... not sure what i did to much with it. Any idea where i might try reinstalling just the FB app?

all that said, seems others are having the exact same problem:

http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?filter=location&lo...

November 29, 2011 9:37 AM

And someone posted this solution in that forum:

I found the answer via google once but can't find the exact steps again.

Basically, it involves turning off secure browsing (temporarily) at facebook.com while using Internet Explorer (somewhere in your account/security settings at facebook.com)

Then go to the Facebook app in TouchSmart and login, make sure to use "remember login" option.

After logging in there, (I think) you can go back to Internet Explorer and turn on secure browsing again and everybody should be happy.

November 29, 2011 9:42 AM

Problem is that i can't even get facebook to load now. any idea how i can reinstall just that app? can't find it anywhere on the HP site.

November 29, 2011 9:49 PM

Same goes for the RSS app. folder is there... but no app. Any idea how i can just reinstall FB and RSS?

November 29, 2011 11:55 PM

Thanks. Great to have these links. Must have spend two hours looking on all teh forums.

only when i try to install either FB or RSS, it goes through extraction, asks me to proceed with update... then gives me "the update did not complete successfully. (9993)".

any ideas?

again... thanks for all the help!

November 30, 2011 12:17 AM

Ah, yes that. Use 7-Zip or something like it to extract the source installers from the softpaq. That usually works.

November 30, 2011 9:28 AM

Rockstar. All works. thanks so much!
