I just got mine today, the TouchSmart tx2-1020ca. I love it and all but like you guys stated, the pen pressure isn't as good as the Wacom one. N-Trig really needs to develope their own software for it, I'm getting really fed up with this. It doesn't work with Adobe as mentioned before and doesn't work with GIMP. I've tried ArtRage, but I'm not sure I want to buy the full version just yet, so I'm hoping that something would happen.
I'm writing emails and everything, hoping SOMETHING, ANYTHING would happen. Don't get me wrong but I still like this laptop and all, but I was VERY disappointed with the outcome of the 'pen pressure sensitivity' on this thing.
My old laptop, I believe the tx2500? Something around that was made with Wacom and that one was excellent but when I found out the TouchSmart tx2-1020ca was made with N-Trig instead. Disappointment... disappointment. I mean, I LOVE drawing, and I DO use pen pressure sensitivity A LOT. So I'm hoping that this problem will be fixed soon... HOPING.
I have a question, if anyone knows the answer to this. For ArtRage, if I DO get the full version, it'll still support N-Trig, right? And also, instead of whatever types of paper or canvas there is, is there a smooth one? No wrinkles or stuff, as if it was Photoshop or GIMP?
Hello! I recently bought a TouchSmart tx2-1020us, which came out here in the states just a week or so ago.
I am a graphic artist, and so naturally I installed photoshop, but also installed Corel Painter Essentials 4, which came included in the box.
Here is the problem I am facing: when I draw with any tool in these programs via the stylus on the screen, no matter how little or how much PRESSURE I put on the stylus, I get NO variation of the thickness of the line I draw.
HOWEVER, everytime I use the laptop's little inbuilt tab feature that allows me to write by hand and have it recognize my characters, it DOES show a thicker line the harder I press. Unfortunately, this is the only place I am able to get any kind of pressure sensitivity.
Not being able to get ANY pressure sensitivity in Adobe Photoshop CS2, Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (yes I even tried older versions), or Corel Painter Essentials 4 is a HUGE problem for me.
I even plugged in my old Wacom tablet to the USB port, used its respective stylus on its pad, and noticed that STILL- I get no pressure sensitivity! That bit reaaally confused me- it makes me think that there *has* to be some setting somewhere to turn on pressure sensitivity, but I am at a loss here. I could really use some help. :(
Hey, let's lobby for N-trig or HP to quickly develop a link code for the functions to work. What do you suggest? Once word got out that you can't Photoshop properly with this beast I have [fortunately?] not yet bought, then, they'll probably get their codemonkeys to work overtime to get it done. Suggestions? I've been sending the emails too. FYI: have been using HP/Compaq tablets since the ancient TC 1100 - four in all. But I need to have this multitouch thing; work-related.
How? Anyone tried it on Windows 7 beta, though? And another thing, let's get the crawlers to catch this so perhaps HP will take notice.

Photoshop useless on the HP TX2. HP TX2 does NOT support Photoshop pressure sensitivity. Aargh!
From the discussions over at gottabemobile.com there have been lots of issues with the n-trig panels on the Dell XT tablet. I know its not the HP but it is the same digitizer. Apparently N-trig is releasing an update for the Dells, so check the HP site often to see if there are updates for the HP as well.
N-trig is positioning itself as a big player in the tablet/touch market and wants to give wacom a run for the money so my guess is that they will try to make things "right" for n-trig equipped devices.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!
@Sugar-Jar
I'm pretty sure the full version of Art Rage will continue to work. As far as the canvas goes, I was wondering the same thing myself. If you check out the Art Rage website there's a pretty good community of people there who would know the answer.
I've also been trying to get InkScape to work with the sensitivity but no luck. As both GIMP and InkScape use the same basic interface (GTK+) I'm not surprised. I found that they were written to recognize the Wintab API versus whatever N-Trig has been using. I have been in contact with N-trig but they've stopped answering my questions it seems.
So N-trig doesn't appear to respond to my emails, but they did respond to the comment I posted in the support section of their website. Additionally, they have responded to other people as well. So I recommend that you all post comments in that section of n-trig.com in order to facilitate this moving forward, as hajar suggests.
Also, I have contacted HP so we'll see if anything comes of that.
Here's the same problem on adobe forums

most program use wintab api with the pressure sensitivity, but for the wintab Patents holder not microsoft, so not every Digitizer can use wintab for it's hardware!
maybe when windows 7 come, the thing will change, but not now!!
Autodesk only support wintab at this moment, but for furture,
check it out!

So if Autodesk only supports Wintab API and it works with N-trig digitizers, then why don't GIMP or Inkscape work with N-trig digitizers, as they also only support Wintab? Any ideas?
WOW this suck i al so have a touchsmart tx2 i had 4 a week or so and as an Multimedia student it suck to find out that the PhotoShops pen pressure doesn't work with it i will do so doing as see if i can find any thing. and post my finding.

i enjoy drawing and painting with photoshop. when i first saw the HP touchsmart laptop i fell in love but i was wondering if any one can give me some advice. does it work well wit photoshop?
also can i work with pictures and drawings using just the tablet folded and will it work the same as using a wacom tablet but actually looking at see wha im doing like just drawing on a sketch book. really dont want to buy it unless i can get this
can someone please advice?
thanks
steve
Hi steve, have you read at least the topic title? ^^
Photoshop (and all the others program i've listed) doesn't work. I've tried to do some research and found something on the Adobe forum. Seems like the N-Trig have not supported the most used api for pressure.
--This means if N-Trig and HP does not update their drivers to support photoshop ecc, pen pressure will never work on this probgram using this tablet--
I'm sure disappointed but we have to wait.

Well, it DOES work with photoshop in that you can still draw and use the pen as mouse, but it DOESN'T recognize the pressure sensitivity. So you can still use photoshop but it won't adjust the pen opacity, weight, etc.
Yes you can work with it folded, just like on a sketchbook. There are some good suggestions for programs in this thread that you might enjoy if you got this laptop.
Any new developments regarding these issues? I was *this* close to picking up a TX2-1024ca yesterday from Future Shop but when I realized it was using the N-Trig digitizer, I started doing some research and found this lovely thread. I am a concept artist so pen pressure in Photoshop is crucial for me. Ive also sent a "comment" to N-Trig as many of you have as well.
This is the only thing holding me back from purchasing this model. Unfortunately, this is the ONLY Tablet PC available localy, unless I purchase something online, which I don't want to do. I wish I had picked up the older model that had the Wacom digitizer while it was still available. I really hope that N-Trig will either release better drivers/firmware, or that Wacom will take over once again.
By the way, in the programs that DO work with pressure (Sketchbook, ArtRage, etc) or even in Photoshop without the pressure sensitivity, can someone let me know how responsive the pen strokes are for drawing? I like to paint somewhat quickly and Im curious to know how well the N-Trig digitizer recognizes a pen stroke compared to a Wacom digitizer.
I have a cintiq 20wsx and a intuos3 a5 to compare with, the n-trig one is enough good but is too high from the screen. By the way i wish i had too.
Oh i have something to add here! The N-trig have made window7 drivers but they didn't support 64bit yet...
Has anyone been able to test these new Windows 7 driver with Photoshop pressure sensitivity ?
Thanks for your comment Hitsu San. I have a Cintiq at work as well, so am curious how the TX2 compares to it. Don't want to find out until there's Photoshop support though :(
