Can someone please do my a huge favor and test FlipBook by Digicel on your tx2? http://www.digicelinc.com/download/downloads.htm
I would really like to buy this tablet, but I would be using it almost exclusively to animate in FlipBook so I want to be absolutely sure that it properly senses pressure information the N-Trig digitizer. Thanks!
Hello! I recently bought a TouchSmart tx2-1020us, which came out here in the states just a week or so ago.
I am a graphic artist, and so naturally I installed photoshop, but also installed Corel Painter Essentials 4, which came included in the box.
Here is the problem I am facing: when I draw with any tool in these programs via the stylus on the screen, no matter how little or how much PRESSURE I put on the stylus, I get NO variation of the thickness of the line I draw.
HOWEVER, everytime I use the laptop's little inbuilt tab feature that allows me to write by hand and have it recognize my characters, it DOES show a thicker line the harder I press. Unfortunately, this is the only place I am able to get any kind of pressure sensitivity.
Not being able to get ANY pressure sensitivity in Adobe Photoshop CS2, Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (yes I even tried older versions), or Corel Painter Essentials 4 is a HUGE problem for me.
I even plugged in my old Wacom tablet to the USB port, used its respective stylus on its pad, and noticed that STILL- I get no pressure sensitivity! That bit reaaally confused me- it makes me think that there *has* to be some setting somewhere to turn on pressure sensitivity, but I am at a loss here. I could really use some help. :(
add gimp and open canvas to the list of programs that don't work
you can add paint.net to the list of those that do. artrage works and is probably the best program for the computer right now. i hate n-trig. sucks that you can almost make something amazing and have people hate you for it. probably shouldn't be selling it when it doesn't work right.
anyone reading this. please don't buy this computer till this gets resolved. it may never happen. stupid n-trig is based in isreal so there isn't much i can find to do about our complaints.
Windows7 drivers are the same as Vista, the best program you can use on the tx2 right now is Sketchbook, i like it more than Art Rage for concept art.
Give me an hour and i will test it on those program you linked Ryan, i have to try it on Mirage too.
Youre right Justice, open canvas doesn't support pen pressure too, already tested but forgotten :\ i'll add it to the list with Gimp.
Ryan, FlipBook doesn't support pen pressure.
Even Mirage Studio and Paint Shop Pro 9 (Jasc ver.) are not supported.
The reply I just got from N-Trig is the same as other posted here, only this line is interesting:
---
Regarding your issue concerning specific software that does not support DuoSense pressure sensitivity, such as Photoshop. We hope that in the not-too-distant future, programs such as Photoshop and Painter will enable pressure sensitivity that is compatible with DuoSense.
Until then, we recommend that you consult with the Customer Support department of that software's manufacturer.
---
So basically they want us to stay on top of the 10+ pieces of software that we know don't work and constantly badger them to support N-Trig? Instead of, you know, N-Trig using a COMMON tablet pressure API and therefor instantly supporting all that software.
Great.
Thanks for testing it out for me Hitsu. I guess I'll be looking for an older model HP or a Toshiba instead.
Thanks again!

This is what they want and this is wat isn't going to happen in the near future. I guess we have to wait untill a new release of our software and we can't be sure if they're going to support multitouch hardware such N-Trig one. I think is better for HP to shot N-Trig in the ass cause if they don't make new drivers (even for vista64) to fix this situation they're not going to sell the TX2 series anymore. I don't think they will sell this 1200€ notebook to a lot of non professional users.
By the way i'm glad to be by any help, if someone of you will be able to know something new please post it here!
so far the pressure sensitivity program I tried:
artrage
sketch book pro
paint.net
and corel Grafigo 2
but even MS expression designer isn't support MS ink API! that too bad!
The n-trig duosense digitizer in my hp tx2z works with ArtRage full edition, Alias/Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, and all Microsoft apps perfectly. There has to be some feature that it is just not supplying data to correctly or something. I was under the impression that this other software does not work because it only talks to Wacom drivers, but Adobe in particular claims they hook right into the Windows API, meaning it should work in principle.
.
So .. . After only getting the tx2 to work on Alias Sketchbook Pro and not much else [not even CS4], we installed Windows 7 Beta, then CS4 and . .. uncovered a myriad of other challenges, like the multi touch not working, my Rhino and Alias crashing and, surprise, the pressure sensitivity still not resolved for Photoshop. Will tweak and troubleshoot if we have the time, but I have school [Product Design, so I use a LOT of different softwares that needs to work compatibly] on top of work, so the next post may take a while.
Luckily, though, we have other PC/laptops lying ard so I can quickly start getting back to work while our tech guy work on the tx2 now [he should be e one replying to this post, really. I'm just here to warn others NOT to purchase this set just yet.]

Im curious to see what your IT guy can come up with on the pressure issue.

Just like several other people I was wondering how the quality of the tablet is for CS3 and/or CS4. I am worried of experiencing lag or CS4 being too intense a program for this tablet since it only has 64MB of onboard video and 1MB of cache (even though it has a lot of ram). Any general comments that would be useful for a potential buyer about the product efficiency overall? Thanks and I'll submit a letter over to N-trig as well on your behalf (and possibly mine if I get it!)
Best of luck
In these days i'm working on two 30mb illustration with Photoshop CS4 (using an intuos) on Windows7 x64 beta and i'm experiencing no lag and not even a slow down at all. I've even already tried to work with some 350mb psd files and was a little slow some times but i was really satisfied about performance. You have to keeep in mind that the video card shares is ram within the system so the 64mb is only an hardware virtual limitation, almost all the time is using another 500mb.
This is a great piece of hardware (i have the 1099eg model) for 2d and 3d graphic modeling (even zbrush have no slowdown, and i've tried to load Assassin's Creed for test, no slowdown at all in dx9) and the portability make it a must buy if you're looking for a notebook to work on.
Let's make it clear, the N-Trig pen pressure issue is a bad thing, but i wonder if i will use it for illustrations if they fix it. I think that is good only for quick sketching or concept art like all the other tablet pc and the pen, like the screen witdh gap, is no good for precise and long works.
I'ts different if we talk about 3d modeling, in that case screen and pen are quite good.
If you need something else just ask ;)
Hey guys, some good news!
I was playing around with manga studio to let it work under windows7 when i found that after the issues from ms3 they added the switch between Wintab and Tablet PC under the TABLET option.
Well the result is that pen pressure suddenly appeared!!
So Manga Studio support pen pressure with n-trig. This let me think a little, maybe n-trig is right and the problem is with photoshop and not with drivers (cause i'm under windows7 and there are no drivers for duosense).
What do you think about it?
time to send an e-mail over to adobe and see if they have any technicians who can assist if you haven't already.
That and/or place a phone call to their technical support team and see if they can walk you through the steps to fix this. I am sure if it is something to do with Adobe that they would love to fix this if it means better buisness for them but it might take a bit of work and an update/patch of some sort for them to fix it.
Just my two sense.
Thanks for the prompt follow up. Surprised to hear this thing works so well for basic games. Gotta say your post is making me think I should change my mind about this machine...(I was in bestbuy ready to buy it till I saw those specs and drove home empty handed)
It looks like your on to something with the Wintab / Tablet PC switch.
Users of Sketchbook Pro 2 had similar problems onVista, which are posted here.

There's also a handy little app you can download to switch between the two....

Let me know if this is any help....thinking about getting a tx2-1020....

Great find rtistd4. Can anyone with a TX2 test this tool out and see if it allows switching between wintab / tablet pc and, of course, if it enables pressure sensitivity in some of the software we have discussed?
For the vista troubles of any wacom tablet pc enabled you can fix everything reinstalling the drivers. No need a software like that.
The tx2 trouble is a lot different, it's about driver api issue, nothing that can be fixed, they're created to work like this, and you can't change it. Only programmers can, the problem can be fixed either by N-Trig than 3rd party software (ntrig supporting the full wintab api, other programs supporting the tablet pc specific one, like mangastudio).
The program you linked rtistd4 doesn't switch between anything. It only change priority of a certain program that gives an hang when you touch the screen with the pen in wacom tablets if there is the tablet pc mode enabled (to solve it you can disable this funcion, if you won't maybe this program is a good solution... personally i'll disable it cause when drawing i don't want the vista graphics appearing all over the arrow).
So be careful: TabTip-Tamer doesnt solve any pen pressure issue.
don't buy this computer till they fix this!!! I regret it. i have wasted so so so much time trying to figure this out and it should have worked out of the box.
