Hi

I bought a Touchsmart PC back in August and have had nothing but problems with it, one of them being that the built in webcam has never worked, anyone know how or what I should do to make it work?

A little more specific information will help you get some answers.
Which model do you have? Have you contacted HP support? Have you checked HP Update to see your TS needs any software/driver updates? Which program are you using in which the webcam is not working? Do you see the webcam in device manager? Does it have an excalmation point on the icon in device manager?

How do I find out the model? yes I did contacted HP support (about 20 times) but without reply, the webcam doesn't work in any program, I can see the webcam in device manager and it does say its working but it isn't.

To find out which model you have, it is on the label on the back. If you can't get at that then you can right click on "my computer" and choose properties. It should say which model you have in the basic info screen. The main thing though was I was trying to figure out was it a 500, 700 or 800 series.
Just a test for you to try. Click on start - all programs - cyberlink youcam and the cyberlink youcam icon. Did youcam open up? Can you see yourself?
If you don't, look at the icons on the top of the youcam program. Click on the one with the tools on it and then click on the Capture tab. Make sure the capture device in the first dropdown window is "HP Webcam".
I'll check back to see what you find.

I have the same error.  Sending mine back to HP fopr a replacement touchsmart.  Funny thing is if I push on the bezel around the area of where the webcam is located, Windows recognizes it and then it works....until it disappears again that is!

Hello I've seen webCams that wont work until you run a messenger program try to download MSlive then run webcam there. Even if you gon't have a chat person on the other end the cam will set it self up with a wizzard that will guide you through the set up.

I have Windows Live Messenger but webcam won't work with it, I just tested it on Skype and it seems to work with that but won't on any other program.

HMMMmmmm....  now thats puzzling.  So at least we know that your webcam does work since it works in skype.

In Windows Live messenger, click on  the tools menu. Hit the alt key and it will show the menu selection.  In tools, go to Audio nad Video setup and it will do the audio setup first tnen the video.  Make sure "HP Webcam" is selected as your default webcam.

Try that and see if it helps.

push/pull on the bezel near the webcam and see if that initiates it. That's what happens with mine.

What bezel? there isn't anything to push or pull!

The bezel itself.  Right where the webcam is located towards the screen.  I can pull mine forward a bit and then release it.  Sometimes this initiates the webcam into working.

Not sure you can tell by this picture but there isn't anything to pull....

Yes there is. Pull/push the lip directly beneath the webcam. I cannot make it any clearer, sorry! If your IQ is still under warranty, I suggest you do as I did which was call HP Store Sales and DEMAND a free replacement.

I think what rob is trying to tell you to do is gently squeeze from front to back on both sides of the webcam. I think his line of thought may be that the webcam itslef is not properly seated on the circuit board and by poshing gently around it, you will "seat" it into place.

I'm still puzzles why it will work in skype but not other IM programs. To me, that makes me think it is more of a software issue than a hardware issue.
