Hi there - Sorry for asking a question that I know is asked elsewhere but I cannot seem to get to the info I am trying to find.

I wish to connect my Hp Touchsmart via the SPDIF port to my Pioneer AV Receiver Digital/Optical Input.

I have purchased this cable and connected it, ensured that the output is running to Digital and the receiver is set to the correct input but I am not able to get any sound.

The SPDIF cable does not seem to insert very far, it clicks into place but still leaves about 1/4 of the pin exposed.

This is the cable I purchased.

Am I missing something here in how this should work? I am hoping to be able to get Dolby 5.1, via the Pioneer, to my surround sound setup.

Any advice greatly apprecaited!

Many thanks,

MattR

The cable should plug all the way in, that makes me think it's either not right, in the wrong socket, or not plugged all the way in, test the socket with headphones to be sure it's ok. Of course I'm assuming the unit you have is using the minijack as mutipurpose since you don't mention the model, the IQ5/8xx units all use a standard RCA jack for SPDIF.

Hi Diane and many thanks for your reply. The unit is a Touchsmart 600. The port I am trying to connect to on the rear/side is labeled SPDIF and is orange. It looks like a female RCA connector (organge) and I have tried plugging a standard RCA connector into it and it fits well. Does this help with any advice you can offer as I am not sure how to go from this type or SPDIF port to my Pioneer digital/optical so that I can enjoy 5.1 sound from my home system. Thank you again for you answer here and any more advice on this situation you can offer is greatly apprecaited.

Many thanks,

MattR

umm then the cable you showed was COMPLETELY wrong, that won't work, you need an RCA connector on it, not a 3.5mm minijack, and if you press the minijack in you'll probably break it.

You need an RCA SPDIF to toslink cable (if they make them)

Many thanks Diane for the great advice and have it all working now via the SPDIF port to my receiver! Excellent sound too. If could impose for one further question. I now seem to face an issue with my A/V receiver in that the Zone 1 Speakers accept either digital or the analog inputs whilst the Zone 2 (other end of house and outdoor) are only able to accept inputs from the analog inputs. I have tested this and when I switch between the Digital/SPDIF outputs on the HP and the Analog outputs I get the sound as I would expect. So the question is .... is there a way to have the HP output to both the SPDIF and the Analog outputs at the same time? That way I can just control the speakers via the receiver. If this is not the case then I will have to change the default output options on the HP each time I wish to switch between main room and other rooms/outdoor? If you would have any advice on this wit would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for all the help so far.

I don't believe the HPs can output to both sources, sorry.
