Hi Have the same issue with by iq818a. If you lightly adjust the angle of the unit it goes away.
I have an 816 as the title says and the angled stand on the back buzzes like you can't believe. I can adjust it a bit but it always gives out a slight buzz. Anybody else have this problem and if so what did you do about it. HELP!!!!
me too!!!!!! i've been asking for help for a month on this forum. does it sound like the fan is like ticky ticky tickty right like a wire or something is caught in its path
Mine just started. I've opened the back panel a couple times to swap drives and it may have loosened up a bit. Gonna try some clear tape.

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!
Yeahh this is annoying the heck out of me as well. Its the stand.. If i pull it forward off the stand its silent... but if I push the stand in i.e replicating weight on the stand it has the hum.
I have tried moving position, angle, padding and it is still very much apparent. THis is on the IQ820 UK so I am sure it is a design fault. Probably tested in a noisier room where this wasnt picked up.
I just started noticing the buzzing on mine, after spending some more time with it; just hoping someone will figure it out (cause heaven knows I can't).
Also, just wanted to say @David... I got mine in the HP Magic Giveaway too! Never met anyone else who has before; Jamaicans are skeptics at times and none of my friends believed me.....
Well I gave up and sent it back to the shop and have a refund. I am still debating if I want to buy it again..
I am sure it cant be on ALL models as more people would be complaining so maybe we are just the unlucky few.
HP support didnt even try and diagnose it... within 30 days they dont care and just refund... To confirm its definitely the stand and all I know is the stand is fixed the to the computer and you cant remove/refit/tighten.
Hi Darius,
Congrats on your win!

Add me to the list of the unlucky few. Can't get mine to stay asleep or hibernate either.
Try putting a mouse pad under the stand to see if that quiets things down, it works on my external hard drive enclosure, maybe it will work for you. The slightest imbalance in the rotating mass in that HDD can set things to vibrating. Might be good if it was in your lap when it does this during times when your wife says no...
Seriously, try the old mousepad.

LOL...I have a mouse pad under my external drive. Its an old Ximeta External USB/LAN enclosure. Yes, the rubber mousepad DOES quiet the vibration down considerably.
For those of you experiencing the vibrating back panel, take a couple 6" strips of black electrical tape and make a "dog ear" (fold over one end slightly)and stick it over the vertical seams on the back of the removeable panel. Electrical tape sticks good but can be removed easily by pulling from the dog ear. It also does a great job of quieting down the back panel.
Worried about how it looks? hey...its the back of the computer. :-)

That didnt work for me... and this is not an external HDD.. There are some models which have issues with fan noise and HDD vibrations but this is a totally different kind of vibration.
ITs not the back panel but the stand which is physically joined to the desktop i.e you cant remove/change. I tried all manner of rubber packing to no avail.
I only mentioned the external HDD because I use one and keep it tucked in behind my TS. Its on a wood desk and it really transmits the sound vibrations. It was an idea I was throwing out.
Speaking of hard drives, could the noise you are hearing be the HDD accessin/reading/writing data? There wasa nother person who posted a similar question about noises that her TS was making and it turnes out to be the normal noises the HDD makes whenit is reading and writing. The reason I ask is becasue I went from a desktop PC to my TS and the TS is nearly silent compared to my desktop...except for the HDD (normal) noises which I could not hear on my desktop. And of course the noise my back panel made which I fixed.
Just an idea...

i had the saem problem. it happened after i sent my first touchsmart back because of a screen malfunction. (long story)
When i first set up the second computer and turned it on it made a loud buzzing sound. At first i thought it was starting up but i soon realized the sound was not going away. it was coming from the back of the computer. i realized it was the fan. when the computer was leaning back on its stand the fan was touching something inside the computer. if i put a book under the stand it stopped.
i called hp right away and demanded they send me a new touchsmart. I would send them the broken one they sent me (second time) back as soon as i got a good one.
Since i had talked to a "case worker" who knew my situation she helped me right away.
There are 2 points to my story. one, you can fix the buzz by putting a book under the computer. two, if you talk to the right people and have only had your computer for under 30 days, ou can get a replacement. but if you have had it for longer you will have to go thru their repair which means you wont see your computer for a while.
I tried various items under the stand and it didnt work. Also the stand is fixed at a height so it will angle the monitor incorrectly for its usage. I know fans and HDDs and I dont think this was either.
I would love to have troubleshooted more before I sent it back but this is suppossed to be HP Super Sexy PC which can sit in the living room, bedroom, study, kitchen... its lean, mean and shiny and looks like cutting edge technology.... and thats even before you have stroked your fat little digits over it..... Ohh but excuse the fact its got a book/bubble wrap and gaffer tape on it :)
I should not be bitter I am still trying to find somewhere with one of these running so I can confirm if they all do it. To confirm my model was the IQ820 UK
they dont all make that sound. i was lucky to get one that didnt make that sound before to know it. too bad the screen was broken. i now have one that is quiet.
I know that HP, Dell, Acer, and some others have had unusually high numbers of problems with the Seagate 500, 640, and 750GB hard drives vbrating and then crashing within the first 30-60 days of use. HP may be getting those faulty drives out of the system, mine has a Samsung HD642JJ (640GB/7200/16MBcache), and is super quiet, esp. considering that it is a 7200 rpm drive. My TS is the IQ526, I have a friend with 2 of the IQ524's in the office of his car dealership, and his are whisper quiet as well with a Samsung 500GB/7200/16MB cache in both PC's. The HD subscore in WEI is a 5.9 on all 3 machines, and frankly, you would have to put your ear up to the back panel in order to hear it running. Since the 800 series is on a larger, totally different chassis, it may have a harmonic designed in that amplifies the sound of a hard drive going bad. That may well be a blessing in disguise, as it may warn the owner in advance of a crash. Just a thought, it may well not be the hard drive, but I think it is related to the Seagate problems.

The key to this would be does the vibration still occur when the HDD spins down in power save mode.......
Yes, that would definitely be something for one of you to try, but you need to be certain that the cpu or video card cooling fans' absence is not contributing to the buzz (or lack of a buzz). When the hard drive shuts down, it will be an unusual event, as usually when there is no hard drive activity, there is no smart fan activity either. Does this noise or buzz seem to increase or decrease in intensity under varying conditions, or is it a constant buzz? Have you noticed an increase in pitch or amplitude during defragmentation?
Dave
Have you tried gently pressing on the stand and the back panels to see if the noise goes away?

Boy, it sure would be nice if HP put the same efforts forth on this issue as this group has, it would be resolved by now with their resources. I say they send us all a test mule to run through the paces to see if we can all brainstorm this problem and find a fix for it. It would be cheaper in the long run to send us each 800 series TS's and let us compile a list of fixes and send our recommendations in for their engineering approval. We used to do this in the avionics department where I used to work all the time, and it got prototypes and special projects done in half the time it took a legion of engineers to sit on it and muddle through until the techs came in and bailed them out of their mess. We had to outline it every step of the way for them, because most of them were afraid to make a final decision that might affect safety of flight, and the rest were in the wrong profession altogether.
Sounds good to me, how 'bout it HP? I'm game... RU?
