I'm not sure how well they work but I did a quick Google and came up with many USB to HDMI options.
After 15 days, I am returning my Touchsmart. One reason, and one reason alone. No Video Output port of any type.
Here's the story
I called HP prior to purchasing, and I was assured that the TouchSmart had an HDMI output port, which is exactly what I needed it for.
After I ordered and received it, I honestly did not have time to even look at it for 5-6 days. Once I did get it out, I noticed right away, no HDMI port.
So I played with it for a bit, then decided to call HP. The entire duration of the call was 2 hours, 10 minutes. During that time, I spent approx 80% of the time on hold, 20% with actual people. During the 20%, I spoke to 4 people.
Person #1: No sir, the TouchSmart computers do not have HDMI ports. Sorry, I will connect you to sales.
Person #2(Sales): Sir, it most certainly does, and you simply did not pick the right choices. So I asked, what do I need to do? Hold please, I will connect you with someone who can help you configure it correctly.
Person #3(Sales, I think): Oh sir, yes we know. You cannot select HDMI from the online-ordering system. However, here is what we will do. You send us back the HP(HP will pay shipping). Once we receive it, we will build you a new Touchsmart, using your original choices, along with the HDMI. The HDMI will cost more, but we will credit you the difference. WOW!!! I am so exicited at this point. I am getting what I originally wanted.
Person #4(I am assuming Person #3's supervisor): Sir, I am very sorry but we do not have HDMI, or any other video out ports available for the Touchsmart. So, I ask what happened. Well, we are just as confused as you are here. So, if you would like to return it, we will start the process.
I did not, simply because my ear hurt at this point holding the phone for so long. But, come Monday, it will be back in the box and on it's way back.
How is all of this possible. Initial sales says it can be done. Person #2 and #3 even goes as far as apolgizing and offering to give it to me for free, and #4 squashes it all to pieces!!!! Every other HP, non-touch screen has an HDMI out. Why cannot this computer? I am not even sure, after that support call that I would even get one, even if they did offer it in the future.
Simply said, very disappointed.
Not really the point. The fact of the matter is how people can tell how many different stories. Yes, I actually went and purchased two options: 1.) A Media Center Extension. Not really effective. 2.) A USB to HDMI. The picture quality is not really up to par, as USB 2.0 is not really effective in this type of situation.
I hear you. My phone calls or chat sessions to HP, (Philippines), have for most part been less than satisfactory.
