The 830 has the "personal media drive" slot that with some slight work would be a good place for the SSD, but the issue is not having the 2nd SATA port and I would hate to give up the optical drive.
I'm about to test the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive in my IQ846, I'll let you know how it works. The biggest issue with a high performance 3.5" HD is the noise and vibration, that's why I'm doing the 2.5" hybrid in a quiet box 3.5" case.
Have not visited the forum for quite a while.
I still have my IQ830 and have been unable to find a worthy replacement for it so far.
I recently modded my HP Envy 14 laptop by removing the optical drive and putting my original HDD in there and installing an SSD in place of the HDD. This setup gave me a great performance boost.
I have been wondering if any has tried installing an SSD and whether it owuld not be an overkill for an over 2-year old PC with just DDRII, C2D 7450 and 9300GS graphics.
Have you guys got any experience?
I was also thinking that if it was worth upgrading to an SSD I could also remove the optical drive and put HDD there and keep both?
Have you also got experince with replacing the HDD on these? What 3.5" high performance HDD would you reommend if not an SSD?
Thanks in advance,
Szadzik

Hmm,
Do you think the personal media drive can be somehow used for SSD? I will have to look around and see if they still sell them and maybe one could put an SSD into their enclosure.
I do not care about an optical drive as I hardly ever use it and there are external ones too, so that would be always an option if one needed an OD.

I have found a video with instructions on replacing an hdd in the Pocket Media Drive.
Is this what I want to buy to put it in the media bay on my PC?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/HP-Pocket-Media-Drive-160/dp/B000W8HDHS
The only question is if it allows the PC to boot from that drive.

It's USB 2.0 and booting from it is not the goal.
I was simply suggesting that in your quest for a location to place the drive that is a very good spot.
Are you sure it is connected via USB and that cannot be bypassed?
I am not sure so Iam asking as I am not an expert in hardware stuff.
Here is a bay like mine:

Do you think on the basis of the MoBo layout there is a way to connect an additional SSD anywhere?
Maybe put it in the media bay and connect it to where optical drive is connected atm? Possible if I do not care about OD you think?

Sacrificing the optical drive is an option but I think it's sorta crazy, I use the optical drive often.
You also want to be a bit careful when you say "i'm not an expert in hardware stuff" since any time that you're going to be going this deep you need to be a hardware expert, these parts are not the same as any standard desktop, you need to be savvy in being able to disassemble something along the lines of a notebook to be comfortable with this process.
I do not care about the optical drive as I never use it. External one can be used if need be.
Maybe I exaggerated when I said I am not a hardware expert. I did take my laptop apart and took out the OD and put my HDD in there :); by following the service manual of course.
The only question I keep asking myself is whether the CPU and GPU will be fast enough for the SSD and I will see a real improvement in overall speed when opening applications etc.

Szadzik said:Exactly, you have no idea how much the HD is holding you back until you go SSD, it's night and day.Diane said:Even with an old CPU like C2D 7450 and low end GPU, RAM?There is never a situation where an SSD doesn't make a HUGE positive difference in that regards that I have seen.
Onto the details then.
Do you think it is possible to use a cable and go straight from the SATA connector used by the OD and use it for the SSD instead?

I had that somewhere, but I think that was only for replacing the HDD/ RAM
Is there another one?

Just found your instructions. Will download the right manuals and have a look at how difficult it would be.

In the ned I decided to skip all the modding and buy a new PC. I chose a nice HTPC full ATX case that matches my audio equipemnt (Zalman HD503) and put together a nice PC. I will be able to upgrade it the way I want. Not a one box solution, but also allowed me to choose a good screen - either Dell U2711 or Hazro HZ27WD.

HA! that certainly does solve the issue.
FWIW I have been very happy with the compromise of the Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive for my use, starts quick and gets to where I need it pretty quickly.

I did think about the XT, especially the newer version available in 750GB, but it seemed to me that 750GB might not be enough space for me and I decided not to get it. It is not cheap either.
When buying the HTPC, I went a bit over the top and got i7-2700K, 8GB 1600mHz RAM, Ati 6870 on an Asus P8Z68 Deluxe Gen/3 and all that in the Zalman case. It should last me quite a long time now, even if I have to upgrade GPU, I hope :)
The only last problem is the screen to choose. I am thinking about buying an IPS screen like Dell U2711 for around 550 Euro, a Hazro HZ27WC 480 Euro or a cheaper and less fancy Asus VK278Q for 360 Euro. I have some time to decide, almost a month, but I am already tired of researching all that ;)

I specifically went for the Momentus XT because it was a 2.5" that I could put in a 3.5" quiet box adapter so the machine is much quieter now, almost silent.
For me even 500GB is 2x what I need, the IQ846 is in the bedroom to play media and watch tv off of an HDHomerunPrime, all the media is in other locations.
If you only use it as a secondary PC then it is perfectly fine. I use it for everything I do on a PC, so I need something more powerful.
