I have backed up all my pics, docs and other important things to an external hard drive.  I have the 2 recovery dvd's that were made when we got the pc. I have had it w/things stopping working when window's or hp does an update and I want to peel everything back, take it really slow and pinpoint where some of the trouble spots are.  Am I missing anything?

oh, and I didn't mention---the reason I'm at this point is that my dvd slot won't even accept a disc anymore---I have no idea if that's going to make it impossible or not. sigh.....

Well, to do a restore, you have two options. The first is to use the recovery partition on the hard drive. When you boot the computer you get a blue boot screen with several options for pressing function keys. One of those options is to press f11 to do a system restore. That should work if you have not created the disks or your drive is not working. The other method is to use the recovery DVD's.

However, the drive not working presents another problem. You say it will not accept disks. Is it possible that another disk may be stuck in it? The problem here is that it is not like a regular "tower pc" where you can open it right up and eailly swap out a new drive. That may require a repair by HP.

It is also possible - but I have not tried it on mine - that you can boot from an external USB CD/DVD drive. I may try that myself to see if I can better answer your question.

Hope that helps some.
