HP has finally released a firmware update for the 7200.11 Seagate Barracuda drive (affected model ST3500620AS).

If your computer has been freezing, or if your hard drive has all of a sudden stopped showing up in BIOS (BIOSHD-2 error), this firmware update might unbrick your drive and give you access to your data again.

"Corrects an issue where the hard drive cannot communicate with the computer immediately following a power cycle (system is powered off and then powered back on)."

Find it here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&swItem=vc-68182-1&prodTypeId=12454&prodSeriesId=3733137

I am going to try it on my bricked drive tonight and will let you know how it goes.

cheers!

Thanks doon for the info. I expected something like this would be coming from HP after seagate got their ducks in a row. I'm sure HP wanted to do some internal testing before they released their fix.
Please let us know how it worked for you.

Just wanted to let all of you know that this was harder than expected.

1) The newly posted firmware fix may not work for you right away, but...
2) there is a solution!

I just unbricked my drive and recovered ALL OF MY DATA!

Here is the solution I posted:

Hope this helps!

You can download this firmware (bootable iso cd version) directly from the seagate website.

In the past,my system frequently freezes or becomes very slow and got to let my computer turned on for an hour or more without touching anything before windows finally wakes up and run fast as normal.formating the drive won't fix anything and takes 10X normal formatting time.

and yes, flashing with this firmware really fix the problems.

I didn't know this was such a critical update or that it even affected my Touchsmart IQ816 until a month ago, my drive suddenly wasn't recognized by the pc anymore. I was very, very lucky and got a great local computer tech who took the time to learn a special technique for unbricking the drive. As soon as he had it unbricked, he flashed the firmware with the update. My pc is back to running smooth.

The problem with this firmware bug is that most people think their drive is dead. It isn't. The data is still there, the drive actually still works fine. The bug puts your drive into a permanently locked busy state. It just needs someone who knows how to unbrick it for you. You don't need a new hardrive. And the sad thing is, I've heard tons of stories of people having to get a new drive over this. You don't need a new one. You just need the right person for the job.

This firmware update should be listed as CRITICAL. A lot bigger deal should be made over it. Too many people don't know that it's not just another update. Without this update, your Touchsmart is a ticking timebomb. And there is nothing scarier than having your pc suddenly decide you no longer have a hardrive. And I didn't even know if the tech would be successful at unbricking it. Plus, I had to pay for this and a special adapter he had to order to fix it with.

Hopefully, it will never happen again. All my firmware is updated now.
