Hi Nem and welcome to the touchsmart community. The short answer avout Win 7 is it is good but it is a Beta and you stated that you don't have time to muck around because you are starting school. So, my advice to you is stick with what is installed for now and get to know it.
The forums here have lots of advice and tips so I encourage you to browse through them.
First and foremost, especially if you intend to use Win7 later, make a set of recovery disks now.
