First, Do you have cable or DSL. Not exactly relevant but it helps my train of thought...especially if I have more troubleshooting to do.
First, right click on your "Network Icon" and see if it says "local Area Connection". Also, Right click on "my computer" and choose properties and then go into device manager. Make sure your network card is listed in "network" and that there is not a red "X" on it or and exclamation point.
My guess is that you may have a bad cable between your modem and your computer or you may be using what is called a crossover cable. In any case, try a different ethernet cable first.
Before you change out the cable turn off your modem and if you have oun, your router. You will also need to shut down your computer.
Then turn your modem on first. Wait at least 5 minutes for it to sync up. Then, if you have a router, turn it on next. Wait a few minutes for it to sync with your modem. Finally, turn your PC on and see if you can connect to the internet.
If you are still connecting worelessly then we may need to disable your wireless card...more on that once you let me know how things turned out.
**My reason for asking if you have cable or DSL is that if you have DSL, you will have to put a special filter on everything that is connected to your phone lines (EXCEPT your modem). You need a filter on every phone, a TIVO/DVR if you have one, your sattelite reciever if you have one, your home alarm if you have one.... Its complicated but the filter is necessary and most ISP's provide several of them for free. Mine gave me 6. I had a similar problem with my DSL not working and *thought* I had filters on everything. I forgot about the phone line for my home alarm. Once that was fixed, everything worked.
