I recently purchased an HP Touchsmart and had ISP come in and install the hardware to connect to the internet . He at first connected and then it dropped . He then called to homebase and they did something and it seemed to work and left . I then tried to go into my email and the PC now states that it is not connected and network unrecognized . I have contacted HP and also the ISP and they did some things but still can not connect wired to modem . I did some  things and found that I can connect to a router and connect wireless using my neighbors router . I still can not connect to the internet thru wired modem form ISP . They tell me nothing is wrong with modem and also replaced it once . I also brought the PC back to store where I can not get my money back and could only get a new PC . They checked out the PC and told me nothing wrong with it that and that it was someting with the ISP equiptment . I believe there is something with the PC and Vista setting that they have not been able to help me with .  Does anyone else have this problem or did they and find a fix.

First, Do you have cable or DSL. Not exactly relevant but it helps my train of thought...especially if I have more troubleshooting to do.
First, right click on your "Network Icon" and see if it says "local Area Connection". Also, Right click on "my computer" and choose properties and then go into device manager. Make sure your network card is listed in "network" and that there is not a red "X" on it or and exclamation point.
My guess is that you may have a bad cable between your modem and your computer or you may be using what is called a crossover cable. In any case, try a different ethernet cable first.

Before you change out the cable turn off your modem and if you have oun, your router. You will also need to shut down your computer.
Then turn your modem on first. Wait at least 5 minutes for it to sync up. Then, if you have a router, turn it on next. Wait a few minutes for it to sync with your modem. Finally, turn your PC on and see if you can connect to the internet.
If you are still connecting worelessly then we may need to disable your wireless card...more on that once you let me know how things turned out.

**My reason for asking if you have cable or DSL is that if you have DSL, you will have to put a special filter on everything that is connected to your phone lines (EXCEPT your modem). You need a filter on every phone, a TIVO/DVR if you have one, your sattelite reciever if you have one, your home alarm if you have one.... Its complicated but the filter is necessary and most ISP's provide several of them for free. Mine gave me 6. I had a similar problem with my DSL not working and *thought* I had filters on everything. I forgot about the phone line for my home alarm. Once that was fixed, everything worked.

Dave, Thanks for the help and though I will not be able to tell you anything until April as we are up in New York wisiting with our grandchildren and do not have access to the PC at this time . It is cable modem thru Brighthouse but the phone is thru Embarq . I have tried three different ethernet cables and still nothing . I did see something about possible down level modem with this new Vista program . Not sure what Brighthouse is using but they were able to connect the tech's laptop to the modem no problem .
