I am loving my new Touchsmart (mostly), but have a problem with the Touchsmart waking up from sleep. I use the remote to put the Touchsmart to sleep, when I am done watching the TV. At odd times during the day, it wakes up showing the TV guide on the screen.

I searched the Event Log and found that the wake source device is one of three things:
USB Root Hub
Power Button
RTC (which I understand signifies Real Time Clock)

How can I find out exactly what is waking my Touchsmart, and how I can keep it asleep?

If I cannot fix this issue, I am thinking of changing my screensaver to a black screen. Then even if the Touchsmart wakes up, it will still show a black screen. My belief is that after a few minutes of inactivity it will go back to sleep. Is my thinking correct here?

Any technical advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

USB Root Hub is a USB device that is waking up the TS. However, the bluetooth dongle that is used for the keyboard and mouse is also plugged into a hidden USB port and the mouse could possibly be waking it up.

Power button is what it says..the power button. Is it showing as a wake event or sleep?

RTC, well Im still trying to figure out which event is triggering that.

I have successfully made mine stay asleep by turning off wake on LAN for the wired lan and turning off wake events for my mouse.

Your blank screensaver is a good idea but the back light may still bleed through a bit casting some light on your darkness. I set my screen to blank in 5 minutes of no use. That turns off the backlight as well.

Hope that helps.

I wonder if the RTC could be caused by a Windows Scheduled Task or a scheduled recording?

Also, I've found that it's easy to wake mine up with an accidental mouse movement. I have my mouse and keyboard on a cabinet that tends to move a little when I open the drawers. Occaisionally it causes the TS to wake up and the cabinet will have barely moved at all.

Depends on what USB devices you have plugged into your USB ports. Try unplugging any USB devices and putting your TS to sleep. Then see if it wakes.
NOTE: The Bluetooth Dongle for the keyboaard and mouse is also plugged into a hidden USB port on the underside of the machine. It is possible that it is triggering the wake up state. For instance, the battery monitor for the KB and mouse could be waking up the TS when it sends a message telling the computer that the battery level is xx%...just a thought.

I had the same issue, called tech support. Instructions were: open control panel, device manager, network adapters, right click realtek, click properties, click power management tab, make sure that ONLY allow computer to turn off device to save power is checked off, and voila, that should hopefully fix the issue. After being transfered to 4depts before being connected to the correct one, 54mins on my cell, but it fixed the problem, hopefully will save someone else some time.

Did you call the dedicated HP TouchSmart support line or the regular support number?

My PC wakes up at 5am every morning. The first event is always a BTHUSB system event (ID 18) with information that the Bluetooth keyboard might not work on startup. I have the keyboard option as well as every device option unchecked to wake up the PC from sleep. So, I suspect something else is waking up the PC and it is reporting the fact that the Keyboard is wireless and may take some time to work as the PC is waking up.

I have done everything HP suggested, including:
* Updated the bios
* Ensured no device is set to wake up the PC
* Checked every task in task scheduler to ensure none are set to wake up daily at 5am
* Changed the BIOS setting to not wake up the PC on AC power loss
* Disable all selective startup apps
* Disconnected every peripheral (external drive, UPS, printers)

Yet, every morning, my TouchSmart wakes up at 5am.

Anyone else have this problem or better yet a solution?

Thanks.

Do you use Windows Media Center for its PVR functionality? If you do (and you have the TV Guide set up), it could be that Media Center is waking up the computer to download updated TV Guide information.

Thanks Geek TieGuy. I don't think MediaCenter is waking the PC up. I don't know what the PVR (personal video recorder) is and the only option that is related to a TV Guide that I see is under Tasks-->Settings-->Automatic Download which is set to download when connected instead of Manual.

What can I do to ensure Media Center is not waking the PC to download a guide or for any other reason?

If you have never set up the TV Tuner / TV Guide in Media Center that should be good enough.

Seems like the dongle for the mouse and keyboard is what's waking it up. If you pull the bluetooth dongle out it solves the problem. However you need the dongle for the keyboard and mouse so it can't be done this way.

Thank you to everyone that has replied. I think Geek TieGuy found the solution!!! This morning, for the first time, my PC did not wake from sleep. After countless updating software and bios, disabling devices and scheduled events - all that failed to prevent the PC from waking, I think I know what I did to fix the problem.

Windows Media Center has a Tasks command that has a Settings menu. Clicking on the General items under Settings, there is an option called Automatic Downloads. That was set to "Download when connected." So, apparently, every 5am, the TV Guide was being downloaded.

This is annoying, because I had disabled scheduled tasks associated with Windows Media Center in the task scheduler. So, I was certain that Media Center would NOT be waking the PC. There is no longer any task in the task scheduler associated with Windows Media Center, yet, it appears to be the culprit. How was I supposed to know about that option for automatic downloads?

I will test my theory by resetting the Automatic Download option to "Download when connected" to see if my PC wakes up again tomorrow morning at 5am. If this turns out to be the cause of the PC waking, I will let you know.

Final update on this topic. While I am happy that my TouchSmart no longer wakes up unexpectedly, I cannot confirm what fixed it. I reset the Media Center General Options to Automatically Download When Connected to see if indeed this was the culprit. But, this morning, my PC did not wake at 5am. The only thing I have done differently was updated the TouchSmart software (it was relatively current before the update) and the Notes and Photos/Video TouchSmart apps. However, that should not have affected the wake-up problem, I think. Anyway, problem solved, although a mystery. Thanks to all who helped.
