I purchased the HP TouchSmart tx2-1020us yesterday at the military Base Exchange (BX). I followed all the applicable configuration steps. However, this morning I went to use to Notebook, my cursor was flickering in the upper left of the screen. Any attempt to move the cursor to another position on the screen with either the included pen or my finger tip would caused the cursor to in place for a few seconds but would then move back to the upper left shortly thereafter. Nothing is touching the keyboard or screen. The cursor is acting as if something or someone is repeatedly trying to tap on the screen because the cursor will switch from the arrow to the pen point display. Here are the steps:

  1. After initial setup, I started downloading the Windows Update files from Microsoft Web site. It  was quite late (3 am Tuesday) so I went to bed.
  2. I woke up around 10 am and booted up notebook computer. After I logged into Windows Vista by using fingerprint reader, cursor went to upper left and started flickering. It kept trying to open the Recycle Bin without human intervention. While trying to move FPP with either finger or pen, Recycled Icon somehow disappeared.
  3. I contacted HP Tech Support, James, and provided the necessary background details.
  4. He asked me to verify computer had finished all the applicable Window updates. Computer was currently in process of finishing updates; however, FPP would occur off and on throughout update.
  5. He then asked me to uninstall all HID compliant drivers for digitizer pen then follow any prompts.
  6. I rebooted computer after completing step 5; however, cursor stayed in position for a brief period; however, after Windows Vista started, cursor immediately went to the upper left and started flickering. It kept opening up screens without human intervention. Finally had to move the "eBay" icon away from upper left, which was very difficult. Note: Icons repositioned upon initial reboot.
  7. He then asked to uninstall all drivers in TouchPad and follow any screen prompts.
  8. I rebooted computer again, however, FPP now occurring during Vista screen boot-up, which is prior to entering password or using fingerprint reader. After fingerprint scan, cursor is still doing the FPP in upper left.
  9. James then asked me to do a complete factory reinstall, however, after software reloaded and during software initialization, cursor constantly did the FPP. Note: every time a FPP occurred, the speaker would also beep, which under normal circumstances lets you know that the computer did not like what you were trying to do.
  10. Any attempt to recalibrate digitizer pen proved unsuccessful because curser kept going back to upper left position and doing the FPP.
  11. James said it must be a hardware issue and suggested I return notebook to BX for new notebook. Case closed out by James.
  12. I boxed up notebook, went back to military BX, and swapped out alleged defective computer with brand new (unopened box) notebook computer. After arriving at home, repeated step 1 around 8 pm. Laid down for a long nap and woke up at 2 am (Wednesday).
  13. Computer was in sleep mode; therefore, I proceeded to wake it up. However, FPP started occurring on new computer, and then quickly disappeared. Moved Recycled Bin Icon away from upper left then attempted to recalibrate digitizer pen.
  14. First attempt proved unsuccessful because of FPP; however, second attempt was successful. Then again, within a few seconds the FPP reoccurred, but only for a few seconds because I kept touching screen with finger and/or pen. FPP finally disappeared.
  15. I "Googled" the problem, but did not find anything related. I did find this Forum, but I was unable to find same problem.
  16. It is now 5 am, Wednesday and I am going back to bed.

Any suggestions???

The only thing I can remotely equate to your problem is some sort of magnetic interference. I experienced this three times with three different tablet PC's.
The first was a compaq TC1000. The poroblem occured after upgrading to a faster HDD. The larger motor magnet in the spindle drive caused a postage stamp sized area on the digitizer to quit working. Adding more shielding sloved the problem. The second was similar on a fujitsu stylistic. Fujitsu actually fixed the problem by sending out a metallic sleeve for the hdd which again fixed the problem. The third issue was with a Toshiba M200 that periodically developed random cursor movement while I was at work. It turned out to be interference from the two MRI units in close proximity to where I was.
If you are on a military base and are close to a large magnetic source, such as a medical facility with an MRI or maybe a large power generator, that could be your problem.

Since you did a factory restore and the problem was not corrected, it is most likely that it is hardware related. It is possible that it could be a loose connector between the screen and the base. On two units, its possible but the probability is lower. I'd try a thrd one if possible.

Thank you for your feedback. As soon as you said "magnetic interference," I immediately knew what the problem was. I have a Sun Light Lamp from Lights of America that overshadows the notebook. It uses a fluorescent tube, which means the ballast is “magnetically” resonating downward towards the upper left hand corner. I could test this supposition by moving the lamp to the other corner (i.e., upper right hand side). That is, of course, if you think there will be no permanent damage to the screen. On the other hand, I did not have the same problem with my Fujitsu Lifebook T2010; however, the screen was a bit shorter and therefore was not under any subjugation by the lamp. That said, is there a way to ensure this does not happen other than rotating the lamp to a more viable location? In the interim, I will move the lamp away from the notebook and will see what transpires in respect to the cursor. Thank you again.

gary. I'm going to guess that moving the lamp doesn't fix anything. have you installed win7 or any additional multitouch drivers?

I had the very same issue - turned out to be a factory defect of the lcd coating -- hp replaced the entire lcd assembly --- wasted almost a month with them. Now card reader does not work. Unbelivable. HP quality sucks.

I have a toshiba portege r400 and the same thing is happening, I will check for interference but I don't think that is it, I can't think of anything that would cause this.

I had this issue also. The "magnetic interference" that dave stated sounds about right. It took me a few times to figure this out. when I sat next to a large neon light. This issue occurred. Sometimes to a lesser extent when I had the tablet next to a large monitor.

Note when you set you laptop next to a large electrical item.

my 2cents.
