Does the tx2-1020 support DDR3 Ram, can I swap out the DDR2?

DDR2 and DDR3 are different memory types so, No. If you are currently running DDR2 then DDR3 will not work. The SODIMM's are keyed (the little notch in them) so they will not fit in slots that are not intended for them.
Same with regular DDR. You can't put a DDR2 SODIMM into a 1st gen DDR slot.

Thanks that is what I figured. What is the maximum memory supported under ddr2 while running 64-bit Vista in this unit then?

According to Crucial.com's memory configurator, the max amount of RAM that the TX2 series will support is 8 gigs of RAM.
See the link to make sure its your model/series:

Although at almost $700.00 for the upgrade, you have to question the use/value of it at the moment....

Ouch that is a bit pricey. A bit cheaper on newegg, but probably not worth it.

Based on that link it shows pc2-6400 (800mhz). Does that mean the stock ram in the tx2 is of the 6400 variety or is it the slower pc2-5300 (667mhz).

It depends... It is usually on a sticker on the RAM.

I have a TX2500z that was supposed to come with 667mHz RAM but instead came with the 800. Sweet.

Does going up to a higher RAM speed (667 to 800) make a difference? It depends. Mainly on what your bus speed supports and what CPU you have. If your bus speed supports the 800mHz and you put it in, you will see an (slight) improvement, if not, it will fall back to the 667 and you will not see any improvement.

What does make a big difference though is if you are running 64 bit Windows and have only 3 gigs of RAM. Going up to the 4 gigs will make a big difference. If you are running 32bit Vista, you will not see a difference.
