Shortly after receiving my tx2z, the tip of the stylus fell out and disappeared.  Much to my surprise, the stylus has been unavailable as a replacement item, and HP claims to have no idea when they will receive inventory.

To resolve the problem, HP actually configured and shipped me an entirely new computer.  This was a measure of last resort after weeks of my calling, waiting, and even a failed attempt to use a stylus they shipped me for the tx2000.

Believe it or not, not two weeks after receiving the replacement...same problem.  This time they have offered to just refund my money, which I do appreciate.  I am, however, very disappointed to have to part with an otherwise very nice machine.

Has anyone else had this or any other problem with their stylus?

I dont mean to sound rude but they do provide a tether to secure the stylus to the tablet so you don't lose it.
Yes, it is frustrating that they do not have replacements yet as it is relatively new but you have some responsibility on your part to care for your purchase. Its a testament to good customer support that they went above and beyond and shipped you a new tablet pc just to replace the stylus.

As far as having the same problem, yes, I did too but was lucky enough to find mine in the bottom of my book bag. I have also had an express card pop out the same way.
Now, I put my tablet in my backpack with the stylus end sticking up rather than down.
It is a bit different in design from other tablets that I have used as the stylus does stick out a bit and since it is spring loaded, will pop out

You misread my post. I didn't say I lost the stylus. The tip fell out...twice.

Sorry...didn't see where it said "tip" thats why I gave you the answer I did.  Wink  My mistake.  You got even better service if they sent you a whole new tablet just for that.

Being that the digitizer is n-trig and not wacom, I can't suggest the wacom stylus tips because I'm not sure they will work.  They're readily available and quite cheap.  Unfortunately I'm not sure they will work.

If you know anyone who had a wacom tablet, try swapping tips or comparing them.  If you live in the US, I'll mail you one of my slightly worn ones just to see if it fits/works.  Mines from a WACOM but all it does is transmit the signal from the crystal in the pen.  Worth a try as it will only cost me the postage.  PM me you address if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer, but I really don't think it is worth the trouble. The tip is particular to the stylus. As I and the two case managers who have tried to helped me have learned, the stylus itself is unique to the tx2z. I presume because of the N-trig technology. Ironically, the stylus they sent me for the tx2000 actually came with it's own replacement tips. But they are just little pieces of plastic, unlike the original tip which has a metallic interface to the mechanism inside the stylus. Honestly I think this is a case of an over-engineered part.

I'm going to try and rig something up as a last ditch effort. Hopefully someday HP will at least get their inventory problem resolved and maybe eventually address the design flaw.

Thats a good point fredd...I didn't think about that./  Just not sure if it will fit in the HP stylus silo but it will probably work.

HP and Gateway have a history of complicated styli.  The stylus that came wwith my HP (compaq at the time) TC1000 was electronic and used a single AAAA (quad a - nearly impossible to find) non rechargeable battery.  They changed the design and the digitizer from a finepoint to a wacom when the TC1100 came out.

My Gateway CX2620 also uses a finepoint but the stylus is sealed and once the rechageable battery gives up, thats pretty much it.  I'd have more luck finding a replacement stylus for the HP TX than I would the Gateway.

The Dell XT pens do work on the tx2, I couldn't find my pen for weeks so finally my friend loaned me his spare for his XT and it worked fine, though every time you restart the computer, you have to recalibrate :/

Good news! The tx2z stylus is finally available both as a replacement part and via HP Shopping as an accessory. :)

any word on a stylus with an eraser for the tx2? I wasn't able to find one online so I sent a message directly to HP to see if they could further help. :-\

Waughla, I've had the same problem. Where do you find the replacement. I've searched on the HP website but can't find it.

March 24, 2009 12:34 PM

Sorry to hear that, but it's good to know I'm not the only one!

The part number via HP Shopping is FV268AA. It is around $25.00.

If you contact HP for a replacement under warranty, the part number is 516454-001.

Good luck!

even though I posted this in other threads I will mention it here since it is on the topic.

I spoke directly with HP technical support and was told there are no eraser stylus's at thsi time but there is one in production which should be hitting the market hopefully in the near future.

AKA give it a year or two ;-)

I have just tried to order the part via HP shopping and via customer service as well as their parts service and they told me that they do not have the part.  they told me to contact Impact solutions at 800.797.7164.  Impact told me the part sells for 89 dollars.  This bites and I cant believe that HP does not stock this item.  this is a consumable and I bought the computer to function as a tablet.  I have the pen but the plastic nib is missing and nowhere to be found.

this is not what i expected for support from HP!

March 30, 2009 5:28 PM

They had it a few weeks ago. Your comment regarding Impact is a new one to me.

My case manager ordered one from HP Shopping on my behalf, and also one from his replacement inventory. I received both a few days ago. If your device is under warranty, call for technical support and have them assign a case manager.

This experience has opened my eyes as to how dysfunctional HP's internal workings really are. The Touchsmart line seems to be particularly troublesome, as it appears to be yet another division, this one in Canada. The different units do not talk to each other. I've had to play matchmaker and informant between HP Shopping, HP technical support, HP Touchsmart customer service, and HP Touchsmart case manager(s) several times over this issue. It's quite disappointing, and this will be the last HP product I buy if I can help it.

On a somewhat related note, I made the mistake of trying to use the online chat technical support because my HP Updates application refuses to see the new software updates for my device. The resolution I got was, "I would just uninstall it. Anything else I can help you with?"

I have a problem with my stylus for the HP Pavilion tx2510us. It starts to click or write even if the tip is still an inch above the screen. I can't fix it. And I really find it annoying. Please Help. Thanks.

The TX2500 series is a bit different than the TX2 series that is being discussed in this thread but the procedure is the same for turning off the "touch". I too was having a similar problem on my tablet (TX2500z). Whenever I write, I lay my palm down first then the pen tip. My palm ended up being the input device rather than the pen. The pen tip is supposed to momentarily disable the touch when it comes within an inch or so of the screen - I think it is more like 1/2".

Anyway, to disable touch click start > control panel > pen and input devices and then click on the "touch" tab. Uncheck the box marked Use finger as an input device then click apply. This will turn off touch and allow you to use only your pen.

To enable touch just repeat the above instructions.

Since I use pen more than finger, I leave mine disabled but if I'm going to surf or do other finger dependent things, I just re-enable touch.

Here is the link to this stylus (the website knows it only as a "digitizer"):

http://www.shopping.hp.com/store/product/product_detail/FV268AA

My *HORRIBLE* experience with this laptop and HP's "award winning" support (what award? slowest? rudest? most ignorant?) has convinced me to walk away from HP and NEVER look back. I can't even begin to tell how disjointed and pathetic their support attempts have been. I received a defective "digitizer" from the get-go and have waited over two weeks only to be told there is no ETA for when I "might" get a new stylus (digitizer) for my unit. And yet, I just ordered one and it will ship today from their parts store. Laughably poor service. If I ran my business this way, I'd need a big government bailout like Chevy!

Dave,

Doing that (disabling the touch) won't help either. The problem wasn't the touch. My problem was that whenever i try to write using my stylus, it starts "clicking" when it's still an inch above the screen. That's the annoyance. Because in reality, a pen writes when it's already touching the paper, not an inch above it. This makes it so inconvenient to use the stylus, or the tablet mode for that matter. Hence, making the special feature almost absolutely useless.

i bought mine refurbished IQ800 SERIES.....didnt even see one in the package. is it somehow attached to the unit? instructions didnt reference.
