Greetings.
I bought a IQ 5xx series....then a couple days later decided that I wanted MORE and got traded up to the 816 at my local staples. Ones great and all but am not liking the performance too much.
Playing DVD's in MCE pauses at time to time
If a fly lands on the screen it LITERALLY takes control over it
Performance seems to be lacking.
The only things that I have done to it ( in this order ) were as follows:
UNINSTALLED NORTON. (Come on HP...Norton SUCKS....use something that is USEFUL and not a hog. ) and installed AVG instead.
Updated everything....first by Windows Update then by HP Update.
Defragged the HDD ( Which I found out is a cruddy SEAGATE...that will be switched to a good brand soon. )
However performance is still a little choppy.
Tried the Win7 64 bit beta....still choppy and takes longer than vista to boot.
Any ideas? This is a great little PC....but if it does not smarten up within a few days then back it goes. :(
Thank you for your time.

Can I ask what you mean by a little choppy? Is it mainly related to DVD playback in Media Center?
That among other things....
I noticed that window movement is choppy....startup takes a minute or two...even WITH windows 7 installed.
Both problems happen in both versions of windows in case you were gonna ask that as well. LOL
I dunno....maybe it is the cruddy Seagate drive....who knows. I turned off write cache on it and still the same thing.
Also in MCE DVDs play fine for a few minutes...then it goes slow for about 5 seconds....then catches up again. I have yet to see this happen in the HP dvd player or WMP.

Have you taken a look with Performance Monitor? You can get to it pretty easily from Task Manager. Performance Monitor can tell you if certain programs consistently hog the CPU because it keeps a "running average" as well as peak numbers.
In general, the IQ500/800 series are a mobile/desktop hybrid. Processor/chipset/graphics are mobile but the hard drive is a desktop model. So you may be seeing performance closer to what you would expect from a mobile system.
That may be so....but I have seen laptops with better performance. I think that I can squeeze more out of this beauty.

OK, an IQ816 has a T8100 with 800MhZ FSB Core2Duo and 4GB of DDR2 667, with a "cruddy" 7200 rpm Seagate 750GB Hard Drive. I know, because I was going to get one until I realized that the 500 series was more upgradeable. The 500 series has the 1066 and 800 MhZ bus, and the RAM can upgrade to 8GB (2x4GB).
I upped mine to the 25W P9500 2.53GhZ with 6MB cache, and it does everything pretty snappy now. You might want to go to the power config to make sure that your proc is running at full speed, the Power Management on this machine is run like a laptop, so you may be running at 2/3rds throttle and not know it. Mine was, and even with the T6600 it came with, the DVD playback on CyberPower DVD was just fine. Windows Media Player isn't ideal for DVD playback.
Hope this helps.
Dave
Good point waverider. I was surprised to find that mine was running in "HP Recomende" power mode which is designed for a laptop on batteries. Changing to high performance mode made a big difference in performance.
As a side note, I replaced my "cruddy" 7200 RPM Seagate with a slightly better one with a 32mb cache. Improved my HDD performance slightly.
I was also disappointed (for myself and others with the IQ800 series) that the 500 series supports more than 4 gigs of RAM. Bummer. Although at the moment a matching pair of 4 gig SODIMMs is a bit out of reach price wise for me.

David,
By what method did you swap the data on your HDD? I wanted to clone my entire drive as I have been doing for years on XP and earlier, this machine defies my cloning software. I'm not sure if it's the SATA drivers or lack thereof, or if it's Vista64, or if it is HP Recovery Manager, as Acronis has mentioned in it's FAQ. I also have a 640GB WD Caviar Black with the 32MB cache, but the only way to incorporate it is by using the Recovery DVD's as far as I know, so I still have my Samsung HD642JJ installed as it was from the factory. It registers a 5.9 in disk performance, but the standards are as old as Vista, so maybe on the newer Win7 rating, it would show a lower, more scalable number, and I could show, not just feel, a difference in performance.
Dave
I have a HP Pocket Media Drive and copied my documents to that.
Ohter than that, I started with a clean drive and ran the recovery disks. However, there was apparently a bug in the DVD/Blueray drive that caused corruption when creating recovery disks on dual layer media - which has been fixed with a recent firmware update to the Blueray DVD. Anyway, I ordered the restore media from HP ($22.00US) and used those disks to do a full system restore on my new blank drive.
After that - which took over an hour - I removed the bloatware and downloaded all the HP and Windows updates. Then did a Win7 "upgrade" install.
As far as the experience index, it seems like larger cache drives score poorly on the Windows Experience Index. Previously, disableing Write Cache in preferences seemed to improve performance but it has been recomended to not do that.
I had the same poor WEI score in Win7 public Beta (7000) but that issue seems to have been fixed in 7057.
Something you may want to consider for backing up your data is Windows Live Sync. I have selected folders that I sync between multiple computers so I always have a good copy of it. If I edit or modify it, the changes are quickly mirrored on my other computers as well. Saved my bacon a couple times in the past too.

I had troubles with disk 3 using the single layer media, and even though it said it was completed successfully, it wanted me to reinsert disk 3 and retry after the verification process. I was never able to feed it anything that it would call "done", (Sony, Verbatim DVD+R, new media, cake and individual packaging) so I've decided to do as HP intended all along, and order some backup disks as well.
As for the hard drive backup, I don't like to be down for more than the time it takes to swap in a backup HDD that will boot, so cloning is very important to me. For this reason, I am still relying on my old 2003 Toshiba A15 with my most sensitive archives, and I back up daily on an identical clone drive in a 2.5" USB 2.0 housing. Once a month, I swap the internal drive for the external, and it's been working like clockwork for me for years. Now, I must come up with some other way. Once I have a good copy of the Backup DVD's, I'll try disabling the Recovery Manager software and try to clone to the external drive again. I still believe that although that HP's resident recovery program may be part of my problem, I think that the missing SATA drivers are part of it as well. I DO have 2 copies of OEM XP still in the sealed envelopes, so I may want to see how old reliable performs without the Touchy Touch-Screen anchors weighing it down. I bought this more as a small footprint kitchen table top PC replacement with a big display than for the Touch Screen. Up till now, I deplored anyone touching my screen.
You know, this thing could use a rudimentary battery system as is found in laptops to act as a short-term UPS for emergency power outages. I live in Florida, and we experience a lot of spikes and surges as well as power outages due to T-Storms here, and I'd really like to see that as an option since it only requires a small LiOn battery to give the user enough time to shut down to avoid data loss. It runs on DC from the brick, so no power inverter would be required.
Sorry about the tangents I've managed to ricochet off into, but hopefully it's all of some use to everyone reading it.
Dave
Dave,
Funny thing...Disk 3 gave me the same problem. I'd get through the recovery process and get to disk 3, things would run a bit then it would ask for disk 1 again and I'd go through the same process all over again.
The Disks from HP did not do that.
I primarily run Win7 for testing purposes but still have my OEM drive with Vista ready and waiting to swap to in case I have to. I've got the process down to less than 5 mins. :-)

Yes...cruddy. I hate Seagate. Nothing but problems galore and HUGGGEE! RMA rates on those drives due to Seagates bad quality. Thinking of swapping out the HDD for a much better Western Digital Black 750GB HDD instead.
I will check my power settings and see what that does. If that fails then I will just to a clean install of Vista using the HP key.
Or just Win 7.....however this still does not answer why I am getting DVD playback issues in MC and not with the HP DVD player.

BTW, I was able to finish the copy of my Recovery Manager today with of all brands, a Maxell "Color" DVD-R from a WalMart 10 pak of Jewel Cased disks. Go figure, maybe the TS-ST633A likes -R better than +R media. When I burn DVDS with AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, Liggy and Dee's never recommends the Maxell, and everyone there considers them to be big name garbage. I started burning DVD's with a Pioneer, and it was all -R back then with my A05. Maybe I'll give these a try on some of the movies that don't rquire DL DVD's to see how well they play back on the set top box. Liggy and Dee's reports that there are very badly manufactured store-bought DVD's out there that don't play nicely with most set top players, so it could be a case of your slot load player. Have you considered trying an external DVD+R/RW for playback? I know that the USB is sometimes a bottleneck, but if it plays smoothly from there, it could be immature firmware, MS Indexing running on the HDD, sucking channel time away from the DVD, or just a poor component choice by HP. Did you check your power settings to be sure the CPU is running at full speed?
Dave
I forgot about the indexing service. I will turnt hat off and see if it helps out.
Hmm....I do not have an external DVD drive but I can use my Xbox HD DVD Drive and see how that works out.....

The Xbox DVD has it's own OS and CPU as well as it's own video renderer, it will play as flawlessly on your TS as it will on a TV set. You won't prove anything, you'll need to see which of the 90+ resident memory thieves (In Task Manager) you can live without while watching DVD's on the TS, and shut them down temporarily. No pleasure of watching a movie without the pain of getting the PC dressed and ready to go out to the movies...

Best thing to do with a Touchsmart.... Disable autostart on the Touchsmart applications themselves. In my experience, they're the reason my Touchsmart IQ815 ran dog-slow for the first 2 weeks I had it. As soon as I disabled those apps, I was fine.
On the IQ52x and IQ82x series the autostart (and, if I remember correctly, "quick-launch" as well) setting was turned off from the factory.
There's a thread somewhere here detailing a user's experience regarding the processor upgrade. In a nutshell, it works as long as you choose a processor that is offered in the CTO model as the cpu tables need to be in the bios for it to work at full speed (although the tech manual says you can use any as long as you have a correct FSB and socket compatible CPU). Depending on the model you have is the choice of cpu's you can get.
