Hi

I have a three months old touchsmart iq820 which I believe has some problems with the graphics card. The screen displays red vertical lines all over the screen after a an hour or so of use. If I turn it off the lines disapear for a while but then returns. If I squeese around the edges of the computer the lines dissappear again but then returns when I release the grap. This leads me to believe the might be some poor connections between the motherboard and the graphics card. I have tried to open the panel on the back of the computer but it is not much room to search for the nvidea card.

I hope anyone can give me some help about where to look or how to open the computer to get to the graphics card.

Thanx

Protrainer,
It could be a couple issues, first being a defective graphics card and the other like you mentioned, a poor connection. It can also be a cooling issue. The CPU and the Graphics card each have their own dedicated fans and if the graphics card fan has failed, that would explain why things would work after you reboot for a couple minutes then fail again.
Since your TS is only three months old, I would strongly discourage you from opening it up and trying to repair it yourself. As painful as it sounds, I think you should contact HP and ask for a repair. You'll have to part with it for a few days but at least they should be able to fix it under warranty. If you open it and try to repair it yourself, you risk voiding your warranty.

One more question....are you running stock HP video drivers or non-OEM?

Thanx Dave. As you mentioned it sounds possible it could also be a cooling issue :-( I will contact HP to get it fixed, but first I will try to clean out the fans. Where on the computer is the fan for the graphics card? The only one I can see (and hear) is on the left hand side if you look at the computer from behind.

and yes, I am runing stock HP video drivers

If I'm not mistaken there is one one opposite the CPU fan, on the other side. However, it should be easy to determine if you need to clean the fan. Simply look at the back panel where the intakes are locates and see if they are covered with dust. If they are, then they need to be cleaned.

Take Care,

David

The only way to take the fan out for thorough cleaning is to pull the stand, back panel, and the RF blanking plate to expose the CPU and Video card. They have similar fans above heat pipe finned heat exchangers that connect to the chips of their individual heat spreader plates, and like Dave said, you might not want to pull it apart, even though HP sends a guide on how to do just that to the consumer in the paperwork bundle. The video card is the fins on the left at the top vent, and the CPU's are on the right as you look at the front of the screen. If you blow it out from the outside, it will just go deeper in and get into the fan shrouding of the heat exchanger, and may compound the problem. It's kinda like snorting boogers when you really ought to be blowing your nose, but the dust in this case has nowhere else to go but into a tighter place where it can pack densely. Good luck, it almost sounds like a bad lcd with the edge to edge red lines, or a loose lcd connector on the back of the flat panel.

Man, did I ever need that good laugh you just gave me.  After the day I had at work (As a Respiratory Therapist in a large, very busy hospital),I needed it!  Cool

Funny, my wife works in a big, busy hospital as well, (Lab Tech Super) and I'm letting her take a nap because of the same thing. I could have used the analogy of taking and leaving a crap, but that seemed a bit too crude for this forum, so to avoid being censored or chastised, I refrained.
