I'm having a problem with the music section of TouchSmart.  I can play invididual songs, but if I click on an album or an artist, I get an error message saying the TouchSmart music program has stopped working.  I reach HP Touchsmart support via phone, and a very nice person (Florence) led me through the process of uninstalling and reinstalling TouchSmart 2.0 and well as the pictures/music/video software.  Once through that process, I was able to click on an album and play the music, but the solution last about 5 minutes.  Now the problem is back again.  I emailed HP support and got a response pertaining to the format the music is saved in.  I responded that's not the problem, and that's the last I heard from HP.

I can play the music using my iTunes library, so this isn't a big deal, except for the fact that I'm annoyed at having paid for a feature (one that HP likes to brag about) that doesn't work.

Anyone have any ideas for a fix?

are you playing mp3 or Itunes mp4? The problem may be related to itunes palylists or tags on the file. I think there was some discussion a while back about this. I'm gonna have to go back and look.

MP3 . . . combination of MPEG and AAC files. I don't see how that would be a problem. Plus, I can play everything is I go the the option of listing the songs individually. It's just when I click on an album or artist that I get the error message.

I too have problems with playing music in touchsmart.
I loaded about 200 mp3s and they played perfectly. Then I loaded more tunes from a CD. The CD tunes play but the original tunes, although they are in the list of songs, will not play. If I select to play from albums the original tunes still will not play. I tried changing some mps to avi files but it made no difference, still would not play.
I can play them from the list in Windows Explorer with Windows Media Player but not in the touchsmart mode.
I tried reloading the original files in a different folder but they would not play in touchsmart, although they are in the list of songs.

I'm having exactly the same problem.  Reinstall per HP tech helped, but didn't last.  Itunes is fine.  Did you ever get resolution?

No, no resolution.
I thought of deleting all my .mp3 files and reinstalling them but I don't think that will work.
When I get time, I will rip the origial music mp3s to .wma files and see if they work. I have some wma files that work now so may be the old mp3s will work.

Hi,

The Artist and Album can work well in my side.
1. May I know what version you are talking about?
You can check it by clicking [Setting] button, the version information will be listed at the bottom, supposed to be 2.5.xxxx or 2.7.xxxx
2. What did the error message say? Can you paste the error message?
3. Just curious how to generate the MP3 you mentioned (conbination of MPEG and AAC file)

I've got version 2.7.1.2217. The error message is a Windows message, saying that the music program has "stopped working." It flashes on and off too quickly to copy and paste.

The version number is: 2.5.3238.28760
There was no error messages. If I selected a .mp3 song in the song list the speaker icon would appear indicate that it was playing but no sound came out.
Any .wma file in the song list would play normally.
Originally, .mp3 files used to play with sound but for some unknown reason they stopped.
I have now deleted the .mp3s and use only .wma files.

I learned something a little interesting this week after I set up my iPod touch. However, before I did so, I created a seperate and distinct folder for my ipod music - copies of the music that is played on my touchsmart.
When I installed itunes, the default setting was to let itunes manage my music folder, and download song information and cover art. I think this may be where things go wrong. Itunes is pulling the info from a database that TS can't understand. Just a theory. I'm going to redirect my TS to look at my itunes music folder and see what happens.
