Hello people, I´m very new in this forum but you really help me with my new TX2 1020us.

After read you all about what wonderful Windows 7 is, I installed it and I'm totally agree with you.

But I has two problems that you maybe could help me.

 1) After my installation (Windows 7 RC Build 7100 x64 edition) my PC says me that it has 4GB of RAM but only 3.75GB are usable. I looked for answer for this issue but I can't find anything to solve it. I hope that you have the answer.  Did anybody have this problem too?

 2) The only HP software that didn't work  is the MediaSmart (the software and the middle buttom on the right side of the screen). I read other people with this problem so i don't know if this can be solved. I comment this only if one of you have an answer that i don't know.

Thanks in advance.

Victor, I tried one of my other laptops running 7077 and it says the same thing...hmmm.

Some suggestions from neowin were that it may be related to the microsoft video driver. ATI just released a Win7 beta driver which I'm downloading now and will install. The suggestion was that the Video RAM is being subtracted from the system RAM, however, the HD 3200 has its own dedicated RAM, so it may be in how Win7 is calculating the total RAM. But, in a 64 bit system, that should not matter. I'll post more about this after I experiment some.

EDIT: New driver made no difference in memory useage but someone posted on neowin that it may be due to ATI's "Hypermemory" setting reserving extra memory for the display adapter. ATI Catalyst does not have any settings that I can find to change that but I'll dig deeper.

Well, one good thing came of the new drivers. My video WEI went from a 4.1 to a 4.4 with the new drivers.

Well, I'll install beta drivers later if they improve our performance in Win7.

But usable RAM is still a problem. Do you think that it changes ATI HD3200 performance?

We have to solve it jaja.

I'll be searching for more information

The new ATI drivers improved my performance but dod not solve the useable RAM issue. I rolled back to 7077 and it says the same thing. Funny...I DO NOT remember it saying that before.

Ignoring the fact that you are posting here about a Dell Inspiron when this the the HP Tx2 Laptop forums....

The ATI 3200 card has its own onboard memory of 64mb, and then beyond that it can use up to ~1926mb of system memory to help with its functions (determined by Laptop manufacturer as to how much it will try and reserve). Bios updates (and some Bios allow for the reserved memory to be changed manually from a menu) for the laptop, and some drivers can affect how much it is using. The same for Nvidia mobile solutions, it uses its dedicated memory then siphons off some from system.

^What he said.

Vista has the exact same thing, however it does not display such, opting to tell you only how much total memory your system has.

If you read the first post there, you would see that he is talking about the touchsmart laptop. Not an intel chipset in it....(see AMD....), and it was explained why he was seeing the RAM at 3.75gb quite well. Thread necromancy with wrong info ftw.
