I recently bought the Hp touchsmart tx2-1020us. It gets really hot on the bottom, and like many of you have mentioned is really loud and noisy. I was wondering if anyone knows if I buy a stand for my laptop, or one of the cooling platforms for laptops will solve the problem? Or will the Hp touchsmart tx2-1020us still over heat and have a loud fan?

I know my TX2500 which is similar to the TX2 (same CPU and very similar chassis) runs fairly warm - but not as hot as some other tablets I've owned. My fan is also fairly loud - louder than most tablets I have owned, so, for me, its a trade off.

There are some things you can do to quiet it down a bit as well as keep it cool. First, use the balanced ot battery optomized setting. As long as you don't have to do any CPU intensive things, then the battery optomized will give you the longest battery life, the quietest fan and the cooler running cpu.

As far as cooling stands, you get what you pay for. Of course, the passive ones, or the ones without built in fans just allow air to circulate better but your fan will still run. If you buy a stand with a fan, then you may have to put up with that fan noise as well.

Try the power setings first and see how that works.

Now...one last thing. You mentioned "overheating". Are you saying that it is heating up to the point where it shuts itself down or crashes? In that case, you may have a defective unit. If you are just using overheating as a generic term, then try the power settings.

I have the same issue. It is hibernating because it is exceeding 90F. Never seem to lose data etc, but it is a big pain. Do I need to take this back to the store or will a cooling pad help me out?

a: recommend Grey fold up laptop tray from wally world (works great, and its elevation) and its about $20

b: liquid cool your tx2.... huge bonus points if you do this.

A little puzzled why manufacturers aren't building better cooling into laptops. This seems to be a problem with every laptop I have ever owned. At least my tx2 shuts down and protects itself.

Check out these two models from a company called "Cooler Master" that are not only aluminum mesh stands with or w/o fan()s, but also serve as a sort of protector/shield when you carry the laptop in a bag/case:

The Notepal U1 is made for laptops up to 14", but this model does not include the fan(s) like the Notepal U2 has, which fits 14"~15" notebooks up to 17". Here in the U.S., these are the only ones offered (for now, according to Cooler Master USA...), but overseas they BOTH come in black or aluminum/silver AND with or without fan(s). See these links:

I found a few of YouTube videos on the Notepal U1 and U2 versions here:

There are more I'm sure on the web... The black U1 (no fan) and U2 (two USB fans) are on Amazon.com for $14.99 & $24.99., so I ordered them both earlier today. Since the USB powered fans are removable and adjustable, I can & will change them out between the U1 for my tx2-1370us and the U2 for my trusty Pavilion dv5.

I spoke (received an e-mail, actually) with a Mr. Kevin Voong [(909) 673-9880 ext. 108] from Cooler Master's North American Division in Chino, CA who said that the Notepal U1 is NEW to the United States and the fan for them will be available in March, 2010. You could order the pair of fans for the Notepal U2 by themselves, but they very few in numbers now he says. I figure I can't go wrong with either of these two stands, and it's a good deal that the fans are removable/adjustable, are USB powered, and have a USB out on the other end of the plug. The fact that this stand provides a bit of angle/lift and will keep the tx2/dv5 from getting banged around made this the stand for me to try. Sorry about the book I just wrote...
