I just purchase a TX2z and though in general I am happy with the computer, one item is irritating - everytime I use the multi-touch function, a mouse icon appears wherever my finger touches the screen.  From my POV it is superfluous; I've looked everywhere to turn this icon off and have had no luck... can anyone advise how to rid of this behavior?

The phantom mouse icon can be turned off by either clicking on the "touch pointer" icon on your task bar. It sits just to the left of the last icon and looks like a finger clicking on a mouse. Clicking the icon toggles the feature on and off.
Or, you can go into control panel and selecting "pen and input". On the "touch" tab, deselect the checkbox that says "show the touch pointer..."

That should take care of it for you.

Does anyone know how to turn off the swirling circle when the touch pointer is deselected?
