So I've got my Touchsmart ordered. It's coming this saturday. I'm very excited, but I've been reading a lot about Windows 7.

My question is whether this is a stable platform to run on my computer as it is my main computer, and the only one I'll have available to use for homework?

I see the videos of people running it with the multi-touch function working perfectly. I'm just waiting to see what happens with the RC2 coming out May 5th (according to Microsoft). What do you guys think about the Windows 7 who have it?

If it is a touchsmart desktop then yes, it is a very stable platform. Been running Win7 since the public beta v7000 all the way up to v7077.
Anxiously awaiting my permission to download 7100. As far as I'm concerened, it has almost totally replaced Vista on both my desktop (Touchsmart IQ816) and my TX2500 tablet PC.
I still run Vista as well mainly so I can answer questions here. But Win7 IS ready for primetime.
If you are getting the Touchsmart laptop then avoid Win7 like the plague. (for now at least). There are still some serious driver issues with the touchscreen.

We have a growing Win7 discussion group here on the site and I encourage you to join it and read through - and contribute to - the posts there.

Ok I took the plunge with Windows 7 RC, as a MSND developer I downloaded the New RC release and did a straight upgrade of Vista (not a dual boot) on my new IQ504 and had no issues what so ever and everything is working. Except it will not let me install updates as the HP installer does not recognise the OS, but I got round that. It's way cool.

i'm very excited to get the RC on tuesday. I'll be up at midnight. What are you planning to do about actually getting windows 7. I hear you can't upgrade from the RC to the actual final build. Oh, how'd you get around the updates. I never use the touchsmart crap. I use the touch screen but never once have I found it useful to have the Touchsmart software. So I doubt I'll miss that.

The Vista installers won't work on Windows 7, but you can use 7-Zip Portable to extract the drivers from the EXEs downloaded from the HP support site above. The installers are compressed using WinRar, which is one of the formats supported by 7-Zip.

OR

1) Run the vista driver setup - sp#####.exe

2) Hit next until the extraction completes

3) a dialog should show asking you if you want to continue - leave it open

4) go to the temp folder - C:\Users\(user name)\AppData\Local\Temp

5) copy the folder pftB###.tmp to the desktop

6) got to pftB016.tmp\Source\src and run Install...wait for it to complete
