I too am suffering from screen/program freezes with my Touchsmart. In fact, this screen froze a moment ago and I had do do a hard reboot to get up and running again. I'm getting tired of the black screen asking if I want to start Windows normally with the 29 second countdown timer.

The freezes started about 1-2 months ago. This IQ815 was purchased in January at Sam's Club. Yesterday, I did a full system recovery formatting it to factory shipping. The system recovery didn't go too well. It had froze a couple of times during the process. I did three system recoveries from the computer with no luck. The fourth time I used the recovery disc set I made and it worked. Glad I made a set of discs.

The IQ815 was working fine as I slowly started to add programs and customize it the way I had it, then it was back to freezing.

These are things I noticed:

  • After installing Office 2007, Windows Defender quit working and gave error messages after reboots. Still doesn't work. Had to remove it from STARTUP SERVICES.
  • Kept a watchful eye on Updates coming from Microsoft. Noticed Microsoft pushed IE8 64bit onto the computer. Made sure it didn't happen again after the system recovery.
  • It tends to freeze when Internet pages take longer than usual to load and it appears that all resources goes to trying to get the page up. When this happens, the chain of events leading to freezing occurs. Can't close the non responding web page (that's taking resources), Bringing up Task Manager to force the task closed just hangs there taking more resources etc etc.

Just like the rest of you, I'm not sure how to resolve this headache. Right now I have the Indexing Service disabled on C Drive and I unchecked Auto Start and Quick Start for TouchSmart.

I also vacuumed the area over the cooling fan since it was covered with a thick layer of dust. I thought this freezing issue might be related to heat causing a bad solder joint on the circuit board to expand.

So far we are running OK. I hope a solution comes for us.

Just a quick update that we are still running freeze free.

Without the Indexing Service and TouchSmart Auto Start or Quick Start enabled, CPU Usage has reduced.

I have three gagets running...CPU Meter, RSS News Feed and a Weather application. AT Rest the CPU Usage is at 3%, RAM Usage is at 34% Core 1 is between 0-2% and Core 2 is between 3-8%.

One thing you may want to consider is that your RAM may either be bad or not properly seated. Another user had a very similar problem and after removing and reinserting his memory modules, his problem was solved.

As you may have also found out, heat is an issue that will cause freezes. (sounds kind of funny...heat makes it freeze). In addition to what you have already done, make sure the fans are functioning and make sure it is not enclosed in an area where it can't get good ventillation.

All was fine until this morning. The computer was on for 20 minutes and I was reading the Best Buy sales flyer online when it went unresponsive. Did a hard reboot and came to this forum when it froze again.

I guess I'll try the reseating of RAM. Can somebody enlighten me where the RAM is located at and if I need to remove the entire back cover.

NOt sure about the 500 series as I have the IQ816 which has an small access panel. I think HP has the service manual that can be downloaded and shows step by step instructions for accessing the RAM.

I was haveing freeze up problems I s reading some different threads and the said that you could get update for the IQ500 series at HP.com SP37540.exe. I went to hp.com found it but it was for IQ800 series freeze problems but I tried it anyway (I have a IQ526) I was getting a freeze everyday. going online reading email or just turning on my tv etc... anyway I did the update SP37540.exe and I have not had a freeze for 4 day's now I'm hoping this is the end of having to do reboot's just to use the computer. So far so good.

Is the CPU fan running? Vents blocked....have you tried ruling out overheating?

Just some suggestions from another tech. :-)

Someone please tell me that they have overcome the freezing problem for a prolonged period and what you finally did to achieve same. Just got my computer back for the second time and the internet was unresponsive once again.

Thx

Hi John, not as of yet - the screen often goes black and the computer needs to be shut down where I receive the message

What has HP done to resolve this issue based on individual cases? I can't imagine HP not standing behind their product. After all, after paying that kind of money to buy it, people can't just abandon their computer...

Has anyone else tried what JV mentioned "anyway I did the update SP37540.exe and I have not had a freeze for 4 day's"? What is the status since that time?

I have a customer with a freezing problem and I am doing my best to help find him a resolution.

Thanks,
John

I did that update on my iq818a and still have the problem... on other threads it is becoming more clear that it is a harddrive problem... One user has convinced a hp case manager to replace the whole unit whil others have got new HDs

I have an IQ815. Freezes everyday several times a day. I bought it refurb from Newegg in June and as such my 90 day warranty is up. I called initially for support and they told me it would be $59.99 for a one time assistance call with no guarantee of finding a solution. They told me that the support for one year would be $199. Does anyone know if I get the service for $199, and the machine completely craps out or the problems persist, if they will offer some sort of replacement? Be it for the hard drive or the whole unit? So frustrated. Have had to go back to factory images twice and have lost so many personal files (due to laziness backing up). My wife has also lost some of her school work which came at critical times. Please help.

If they offer you full warranty support for 199 take it. They will have to stop treating the PC as a refurb and provide full one yr support as for anyone else. They will have to make sure your PC runs ok, or even get you a new one if they cannot resolve issues with the current one.
