Hi Guys and Gals. I'm very excited about soon getting my first tablet. I currently am using a Dell XPS M1330 (Intel Core 2 DUO T-9300 2.5Ghz, 4 Gigs RAM, nVidia 8400m GS, Vista Ultimate 64-bit). I don't play games but I do run VMware to run multiple OS's for school projects. I'm a student at ITT-Tech. I am looking at a tx2-1025dx model from Best Buy for a mere $829.99. BUT, is this a current model, i.e. a tx2z? I know from playing with the display model at the store it has that infamous "grainy" screen. I think I can deal with the screen if it is a current model and if it can run VMware with or without virtualization on for just $830. The people at Best Buy would not allow me to reboot the machine and check the BIOS to see if a virtualization option is there like with my Dell. I think virtualization may be an Intel only option. I have not had an AMD CPU since the good ol' days of the K6-2 :) I checked with HP.com and I can build a tx2z with a better CPU (ZM-85 2.4Ghz w/2 megs of cache) and bluetooth option for just under 1K. From reading other post I might can get lucky and get a glossy screen going that route. Is it worth spending the extra couple hundred bucks online and waiting vs the deal at Best Buy? Here is a link to the Best Buy model...

You may want to check HP's website I think they had/have a 400.00 off couponj code which brings it down to 699.00. They also have the HP APP (Academic purchase program) which can save you quite a bit more.

Virtualization is an option on my "little brother" tx 2500z in the bios.

Check here for the discount coupon code:

Woohoo! I won my Touchsmart!

Thanks for the quick response! I checked out the coupon, but after adding the Vista ultimate and upgrading the CPU I'm back at just under $1000 :( My school does not qualify for the extra 10% off either. The Best Buy deal is still best price for me. I still need to know if the Best Buy model is a current model? I mean there has to be a reason it is so cheap with all its options... the screen maybe? I would hate to find out I purchased last years model or will miss out on any improvments to the TouchSmart software or machine itself.

Well, I'm assuming that since the Best Buy model has the "grainy" screen it is in fact a tx2z model. I can't beat the price and so I will be picking one up in the next day or so. Finally I will be able to keep my notes organized and no longer have to use paper :)

Maybe with the money I save (plus a lil more) I'll pick up a new HP home server as well. Retiring my old desktop that only gets used for data storage.

I like it alot but the screen is really bad for watching videos or DVD's. But I mostly wanted it for school and taking notes. VMware does not perform as well as it does on my m1330...but it does run. My biggest issue is battery life. I have to take the charger with me to class. At best I only get about 2hrs on battery and class is 4hrs long.

sorry to hear that maybe you need to get anothe battery as a birthday gift or something :)

I have the 8cell for max life not much bigger than 6cell but heavier i know

I like the movie theatre screen appeaarance (thanks to the 'matte' brightview screen) movies on it esp at night. Do you not like the quality in daytime and nighhttime viewing. Is it too dark to you or other in terms of video quality?

I AGREE: i will try to never run a dvd as it depletes the battery fastest -- videos all on hard drive or streaming

I'm just really used to a glossy screen. Not tried using it in daylight yet. I'll probably order a second 6-cell battery. Once I get the power options set better I'm sure with two batts I'll never need to carry the charger around anymore. Just swap batts during break :)
