Seniors In Touch - How One Company Created a Business Around Touch Computing

Not surprisingly, there are many tecchnology products and services aimed squarely at today's senior, a market comprised of generally non-tech savvy users; the Jitterbug cell phone and the Presto Printing Mailbox (for example) have found success catering to the needs of seniors who can see the benefit of technology, but shy away from feature-rich, complex computing products. However, unlike Presto and Jitterbug, companies who've developed simpler to use hardware and services around them, a small outfit called Seniors In Touch managed to leverage Touch computing in a venture that connects Seniors to their families in modern ways... but maybe not in the way a TouchSmart Developer would think. Seniors In Touch - Simplifying Internet Communication Through Touch According to Seniors In Touch, they use patented technologies to "enhance communication between Senior adults, their families and loved ones by creating a simple to use touchscreen interface for residents of senior living communities." They believe one of the greatest challenges for Senior Living communities is networking and communicating with the family of the resident. Many family members do...<div><a href="http://www.touchsmartdevzone.com/article/5254/Seniors-In-Touch-How-One-Company-Created-a-Business-Around-Touch-Computing/">[Read more]</div>

Although the touch UI is being truly honed on smartphones and tablets, developers are charting new territory in touch-centric PC applications that truly showcase the future of touch computing on traditional form-factor PCs. These apps are consumer must-haves, but also contain many elements to inspire developers looking to craft their own TouchSmart application. HP Music Application The HP Music Application first appeared in the very first version of the TouchSmart Software. The version in TouchSmart 4, however, is the best yet. With it you can discover, explore, and organise music that moves you in your own music library. New features include iTunes sync and top 25 songs, as well as dynamic playlists featuring recently played songs. Enjoy simple multi-touch access to all of your music, all in one place. Canvas &amp; Magnets It's one of the most unique uses of touch on the desktop! Create a gallery of the things you use most. Use magnets on your own free-form canvas to post lists, photos, and even share playlists and videos. Your canvas continually grows with you as...<div><a href="http://www.touchsmartdevzone.com/article/3885/5-HP-TouchSmart-Apps-That-Truly-Showcase-Touch-Computing/">[Read more]</div>

Thankfully, HP has been quick to turn around some new model configurations to include Intel's killer dual and quad core parts. Like before, HP's base TouchSmart 610 starts at $900 with AMD quad core procs, while the base Intel-specced rig will get you 2010 Core processors starting at $950. The real action now starts at $1099 with the HP TouchSmart 610xt, which includes Intel's latest Core i5-2300 quad-core processor, DDR3 at 1066Mhz, and integrated graphics. Step up to the $1499 new HP TouchSmart Quad Series (oddly named given that the xt is also a quad core processor), and you'll get Intel's Core i7-2600, DDR3 at 1066Mhz, and an ATI Radeon 5570 discrete graphics, and an HDMI Input. The TouchSmart 610z and up comes with Beats audio and Wireless N, and can be customized to include Bluetooth (standard on the Quad Series), up to 16GB of RAM, Norton Internet Security, Blu-Ray, and more. All TouchSmarts include HP's 4th generation TouchSmart Software Suite, native TouchSmart apps, and access to developer creations available through HPs TouchSmart Application Store. Don't get us wrong, there's nothing wrong with the look, but HP is combining form and function in some really cool ways. The new TouchSmart610 and TouchSmart 9300 Business PC each offer a 60 degree reclining display. I'd argue the reclined position looks far more useful in a business environment, but I can definitely see some interesting home uses for a PC that can be reclined flat. See more images in the gallery &gt;&gt; The look isn't the only thing that's improved either. Aside from the typical hardware improvements in the processor department, the TouchSmart610 includes an LED backlit display for better blacks and crisp visuals. The sound system has also received some welcome improvements thanks to the integrated Beats audio. See the press release below for more features. What do you think of HP's new look for the TouchSmart? Post your comments in the discussion area at the bottom of the page. Aside from new hardware like the Pavilion dm1 netbook and Envy 17 3D notebook, HP also made an announcement for their TouchSmart line of PCs. According to the press release, HP has made the TouchSmart 4.0 software, originally unveiled alongside the TouchSmart 4.0 SDK back in September , available as a free update for all 300 and 600 Series HP TouchSmart PCs. Users can find the update package the &ldquo; Support and Drivers &ldquo; section on www.hp.com . This should come as great news for TouchSmart application developers. This announcement should not only allow 300 and 600 sporting developers to finally get moved up to the latest release (thereby making it far easier to code and test apps), but it also means the userbase to use your applications just got substantially bigger. Developers can download the TouchSmart 4.0 SDK here &gt;&gt; Full press release below: HP today announced new notebook and desktop PCs that provide exceptional experiences to consumers by offering ground-breaking technologies such as HP CoolSense Technology and Beats Audio &trade;....<div><a href="http://www.touchsmartdevzone.com/blog/entry/3525/HP-Makes-Latest-TouchSmart-Software-Available-to-300-and-600-Series/">[Read more]</div>

With a few reasonably priced peripheral components, you can use the HP TouchSmart PC to automatically turn amplifiers and/or subwoofers on and off with the computer itself, basically using the HP TouchSmart PC as your media source hub. I have the following setup in my kitchen using an HP TouchSmart PC model 600, wall mounted. Search for the parts listed below; I always find them on sale somewhere. Tripplite Energy Saving US550VA 120V Standby 8 out with USB, model ECO550UPS (about $65). Niles TVA50 amplifier or Niles Jobsite A45x2 amplifier (about $200) - I like the Niles amps becuase they sound excellent and are small, and seem to never break, but you can actually use any home audio amplifier. One or more pairs of in-ceiling / in-wall speakers - I am using BG Radia PD-8Ci 8" speakers ( www.bgcorp.com - Expensive at $600/pair, but OMG awesome- Any good 8" inwall or in-ceiling speaker from Polk Audio, Boston or Niles will do about as good. Never use 6", they suck- the 6" is just too small.)
