Not surprisingly, there are many tecchnology products and services aimed squarely at today's senior, a market comprised of generally non-tech savvy users; the Jitterbug cell phone and the Presto Printing Mailbox (for example) have found success catering to the needs of seniors who can see the benefit of technology, but shy away from feature-rich, complex computing products. However, unlike Presto and Jitterbug, companies who've developed simpler to use hardware and services around them, a small outfit called Seniors In Touch managed to leverage Touch computing in a venture that connects Seniors to their families in modern ways... but maybe not in the way a TouchSmart Developer would think. Seniors In Touch - Simplifying Internet Communication Through Touch According to Seniors In Touch, they use patented technologies to "enhance communication between Senior adults, their families and loved ones by creating a simple to use touchscreen interface for residents of senior living communities." They believe one of the greatest challenges for Senior Living communities is networking and communicating with the family of the resident. Many family members do...

Although the touch UI is being truly honed on smartphones and tablets, developers are charting new territory in touch-centric PC applications that truly showcase the future of touch computing on traditional form-factor PCs. These apps are consumer must-haves, but also contain many elements to inspire developers looking to craft their own TouchSmart application. HP Music Application The HP Music Application first appeared in the very first version of the TouchSmart Software. The version in TouchSmart 4, however, is the best yet. With it you can discover, explore, and organise music that moves you in your own music library. New features include iTunes sync and top 25 songs, as well as dynamic playlists featuring recently played songs. Enjoy simple multi-touch access to all of your music, all in one place. Canvas & Magnets It's one of the most unique uses of touch on the desktop! Create a gallery of the things you use most. Use magnets on your own free-form canvas to post lists, photos, and even share playlists and videos. Your canvas continually grows with you as...

Today I found one of my friends shared a video about Multi-touch application. I do watch all the videos which are shared by him, so I did the same with this as well. After watching the video, I installed the application and explored it. It was a great experience. Some of the features available in application are unique and very helpful. I have never seen such gestures even with Microsoft touch demo applications. So even I thought of sharing it, not just with my facebook friends but also with members of this forum (Since some of the members of this forum are involved in development of multi-touch applications. I hope exploring this application may help them). The application that I'm talking about is "StNotePad Touch". After browsing the application website, I came to know it's an evolution of StNotepad. StNotepad have several unique features and are carried forward along with new multi-touch gestures. I will not talk about unique features of StNotepad (perhaps you will experience it once you install it), but If I forgot to talk about new and unique multi-touch gestures, then...

What's New for Developers in TouchSmart 4

TouchSmart 4.0 runs as a full screen application, like all previous versions of TouchSmart. Applications hosted within TouchSmart are displayed on the canvas. Please note that this effectively changes the sandbox that your application is contained by. Some applications may have display issues if they weren't built to resize dynamically, or to handle the sizes that are now possible. Smartlets Smartlets are new to 4.0 and allow users to drag different content “out” of your application and place it on the canvas. You can now have content from your application 'pinned' to the canvas, providing yet another way to interact with your application. Alerts The alert system has been enhanced in TouchSmart 4.0 to include three different priority states. In addition, more than one alert can be presented to a user on screen simultaneously. The enhanced alerting mechanism allows you to better integrate your messaging into the TouchSmart shell. Multi-Tasking Applications are now run as needed, and not all at once on startup. This greatly speeds up startup time and available resources within SmartCenter. The user can...

Since the release of Windows 7 (with its native multi-touch display support) and the TouchSmart SDK we are starting to see a lot of cool, new applications being explored by developers. Whether it's an app you can download and use or an inspired commercial program, we're talking with the developers to find out what they are up to and get their take on the touch community. It's a regular series and we're always on the lookout for new developers to profile. This week’s Q&A is with José deCos.
Guide: Using the HP TouchSmart PC as an Automated Audio System Controller

With a few reasonably priced peripheral components, you can use the HP TouchSmart PC to automatically turn amplifiers and/or subwoofers on and off with the computer itself, basically using the HP TouchSmart PC as your media source hub. I have the following setup in my kitchen using an HP TouchSmart PC model 600, wall mounted. Search for the parts listed below; I always find them on sale somewhere. Tripplite Energy Saving US550VA 120V Standby 8 out with USB, model ECO550UPS (about $65). Niles TVA50 amplifier or Niles Jobsite A45x2 amplifier (about $200) - I like the Niles amps becuase they sound excellent and are small, and seem to never break, but you can actually use any home audio amplifier. One or more pairs of in-ceiling / in-wall speakers - I am using BG Radia PD-8Ci 8" speakers ( www.bgcorp.com - Expensive at $600/pair, but OMG awesome- Any good 8" inwall or in-ceiling speaker from Polk Audio, Boston or Niles will do about as good. Never use 6", they suck- the 6" is just too small.) Reinforce the low end with...

Now, with HP's TouchSmart SDK, next generation developers can integrate applications directly into the TouchSmart software suite. In fact, I have a several reasons why you'll want to develop applications specifically for TouchSmart PCs... A real touch focus - Although Windows 7 came out of the box with touch capabilities included, its interface cannot be considered as a "touch centric." The HP TouchSmart PC provides developers with an interface solely focused on the touch experience (aka 10 feet UI) which is meant to utilize touch enabled user interfaces. When you need to showcase your touch application, the HP TouchSmart PC is an excellent platform for application development. Enormous possibilities for touch-centric applications - Touch has added new a dimension to human/machine interaction. There are various usage scenarios where touch fits better than conventional I/O devices like a keyboard and mouse. Imagine a doctor running into an Emergency Room to quickly look up a CAT scan report of a recently admitted...
